Allegro's strong Q3 earnings overshadowed by cautious annual volume outlook

Allegro, Poland's leading e-commerce giant, announced a stronger-than-expected performance in its domestic market for the third quarter, surpassing analyst estimates for core earnings. However, this positive earnings report was tempered by a downward revision of its annual volume growth projections, attributed to a slower start to the fourth quarter.

For the third quarter, Allegro reported adjusted core earnings (EBITDA) of 1.04 billion zlotys ($283.5 million) in its home market. This figure comfortably exceeded the average estimate of 978 million zlotys, which was derived from a company-compiled poll, indicating a solid operational performance during the period.

Despite the strong earnings, the company adjusted its outlook for gross merchandise value (GMV) in Poland, a critical metric for measuring transaction volumes across its platform. Allegro now anticipates GMV to increase by 9% to 9.5% this year, a slight decrease from its earlier guidance of approximately 10% growth for the same period.

The primary reason cited for this trimmed forecast is a noticeable slowdown in the initial weeks of the fourth quarter. Allegro highlighted a subdued start to the "Black Weeks" promotional period and a delay in winter season demand. This trend was evident in the first half of November, where like-for-like growth decelerated to a low single-digit percentage, a significant drop from the more robust growth of over 10% observed in October.

Despite these adjustments to its volume growth expectations, Allegro reaffirmed its previously announced annual revenue and profitability targets. These targets had been revised higher by the company in September, indicating that while transaction volumes might be slightly softer than initially hoped, overall financial health and strategic goals remain on track.
