AllSaints Posts Record Profits Through Strategic Focus on Quality Sales and Expansion

AllSaints, the fashion powerhouse, is celebrating a period of significant achievement, reporting record profits despite a challenging market landscape. This positive financial turnaround follows a series of strategic announcements, including new creative director appointments and an ambitious expansion of its retail footprint. The company, which also owns the luxury menswear brand John Varvatos, demonstrated a clear focus on profitability, which has proven successful amidst a tough economic backdrop.

For the year ending February 1, the group saw its EBITDA rise by 1% to £69.5 million, a result directly attributed to "margin improvement initiatives." This growth in earnings occurred even as total group revenue experienced a 4% decline, reaching £441.3 million. This strategic decision to prioritize profitable sales over high turnover was explicitly stated as a "deliberate reduction in promotional and markdown activity, designed to improve the quality of sales." Diving deeper into the figures, AllSaints' revenue decreased by 5% to £372.4 million, while John Varvatos bucked the trend with a 4% increase to £68.9 million. Remarkably, the gross profit margin improved to 65.2% from 63%, even with a higher mix of typically lower-margin wholesale sales.

The company's strategic approach to enhancing sales quality involved several key initiatives throughout the year. These included implementing "shorter markdown periods in retail, earlier seasonal launches extending full-price selling, and effective inventory management." These efforts collectively contributed to the impressive financial growth, with profit before tax soaring by 55% to £28.2 million and profit after tax witnessing an astonishing 93% surge to £18.9 million, alongside the previously mentioned 1% increase in pre-operating exceptional EBITDA.

Product innovation played a crucial role in this success, with AllSaints launching a range of "successful and innovative products." Notable additions included the 'smAIISaints' childrenswear collection, a new AllSaints fragrance line, and expansions into men’s tailoring and underwear. Building on the successful 2023 launch of sunglasses, the brand also introduced an optical eyewear range, diversifying its product offerings and appealing to a broader customer base.

Furthermore, AllSaints bolstered its operational infrastructure by opening a new third-party-operated European distribution centre in the Netherlands. This strategic hub has been instrumental in supporting robust growth across Europe, facilitating strong partnerships with both new and existing concession and wholesale partners. This investment in distribution capabilities has positioned continental Europe as the company's fastest-growing market.

The company also continued its aggressive investment in expanding its physical retail presence. AllSaints unveiled its first new concept store at Manchester's Trafford Centre, which received "positive feedback from customers." Other new AllSaints locations during the year included London Bridge station, Glasgow’s Silverburn and Princes Square malls, Belmont Park Village in New York, and Metzingen in Germany. John Varvatos also expanded, opening a new store in Belmont Park Village and, more recently, a flagship store in SoHo, New York. Ongoing expansion includes new AllSaints stores in Shenzhen, China, Atlanta in the US, and in the UK at St Pancras International and Bristol Cribbs Causeway, with further openings planned for the autumn.

Leadership appointments have also marked this dynamic period. Karl Aberg took over as the new creative director for John Varvatos, commencing with the SS25 collection. More recently, Aaron Esh was appointed creative director for AllSaints itself, signaling a fresh creative direction for the core brand as it continues its growth trajectory.

Peter Wood, CEO of AllSaints, expressed immense pride in the company's achievements, stating, “Huge credit is due to our teams around the world. While our group revenue reflects our decision to reduce markdown activity to improve the quality of our sales, we’re pleased that a number of areas across the business continued to deliver strong top-line growth.” He highlighted John Varvatos' impressive performance, noting, “Revenues at John Varvatos rose, helping to deliver its best-ever profit performance since we acquired it in 2021 — a testament to the strength of this fantastic modern American luxury brand.” Wood also emphasized the strong wholesale growth, supported by partner expansion and the new EU distribution centre. He concluded, “Despite the challenging global environment affecting all businesses over the past year, our continued investment in our talent, as well as in product, marketing and distribution, means we are reaching more customers than ever before. There remain plenty of exciting growth opportunities for both AllSaints and John Varvatos.”
