Amazon Delivers the Future with Smart Glasses Robots and AI
Amazon continues to redefine customer expectations for delivery speed, shifting from a two-day standard to same-day and even hourly services. This relentless pursuit of speed has now honed its focus on paring seconds off each delivery, leveraging advanced technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and innovative eyewear to achieve its ambitious goals.
A key unveiling at Amazon's "Delivering the Future" logistics event was the advanced eyeglasses for delivery workers, internally codenamed Amelia. Publicly revealed for the first time after Reuters' exclusive report last year, these smart glasses feature a small screen providing turn-by-turn directions, package code scanning capabilities, and the ability to capture photos for proof of delivery. Designed to replace the bulky handheld GPS devices currently used by drivers, Amelia offers nuanced navigation tips, such as optimal directions when exiting an apartment elevator or how to safely avoid an aggressive dog at a customer’s residence, thereby enhancing both efficiency and safety.
The Amelia glasses rely on a paired controller located in a driver’s vest, and Amazon has addressed battery life concerns by implementing swappable battery packs. Beryl Tomay, Amazon transportation vice president, noted that hundreds of delivery drivers have already tested the glasses along their routes. She emphasized that the innovation "reduces the need to manage a phone and a package," helping drivers "stay at attention, which enhances their safety." This development is part of Amazon's specific focus on optimizing the "last 100 yards" of delivery, often the most expensive and challenging segment of the journey. Previous innovations in this area include a delivery van scanner that shines a green spotlight on packages for each stop, and new digital maps offering significantly more detail about neighborhoods and obstacles compared to conventional mapping services.
Beyond optimizing the final stretch of delivery, Amazon is also significantly advancing its warehouse operations. The company showcased a new robotic arm named Blue Jay, designed to collaborate with human employees in picking items off shelves and sorting them for faster and more accurate order fulfillment. Amazon claims Blue Jay can reduce injury rates and operates efficiently in a smaller footprint than previous robotic systems that required three separate stations. This robot is already active in a South Carolina warehouse and is slated for broader deployment in the coming months, particularly in "sub-same-day" facilities focused on ultra-fast deliveries.
Further enhancing its logistics network, Amazon announced plans to deploy an artificial intelligence system in its warehouses, starting with a facility in Tennessee. This AI is designed to manage high-level operations, proactively preventing gridlock and other operational challenges that could cause delays. Tye Brady, chief technologist of Amazon robotics, stated that the system would analyze all site data in real-time. "When it's fully implemented, we will be able to help operators with their daily planning," he said, indicating plans to roll out the software across its entire warehouse network, though specific implementation details remain undisclosed.
While Amazon continues its march toward automation, this expansion of warehouse robots is projected to reduce its U.S. hiring by approximately 160,000 workers over the next two years, according to a recent report by the New York Times. Counteracting this, Amazon announced plans to hire 250,000 temporary workers to manage the upcoming holiday season surge. Financially, Amazon shares were down 2.4% on Wednesday, trading at $216.78, making it the only company among the "Magnificent Seven" technology stocks to record a year-to-date decline.
