Amazon Ditches Italian Drone Delivery Plans Amid Regulatory Hurdles
Amazon has announced it is abandoning its plans for drone delivery services in Italy, despite previously successful initial test flights. The company stated on Sunday that while it had made significant headway in securing approvals from aerospace regulators, wider business and regulatory hurdles within Italy ultimately made the project unsustainable.
The decision came as a surprise to the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC), who released a statement on Saturday expressing their unexpectedness. ENAC attributed Amazon’s withdrawal to internal company policy, specifically linking it to “recent financial events involving the Group.”
Amazon had initially announced the successful completion of preliminary drone delivery tests in December 2024, conducting them in the town of San Salvo, located in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. These tests demonstrated the technical feasibility of the service within the Italian airspace.
In a statement provided to Reuters, Amazon clarified that a “strategic review” led to the decision to halt commercial drone delivery plans. The company emphasized that, despite positive collaboration with Italian aerospace regulators, the overall business regulatory environment in Italy currently doesn’t align with their long-term goals for the drone program.
Essentially, Amazon found that the broader regulatory landscape presented obstacles that outweighed the progress made with aviation-specific approvals, leading to the conclusion that pursuing drone delivery in Italy was not viable at this time.
