Amazon Slashes European Seller Fees to Combat Shein and Temu

Amazon is implementing significant reductions in the fees it charges sellers across Europe, a strategic move aimed at counteracting the intense competition from rival marketplaces such as Shein and Temu. These newer platforms have gained considerable traction by offering clothes, homeware, and gadgets at exceptionally low prices. Amazon described this initiative as one of its largest-ever fee reductions, with an initial focus on lowering charges for sellers of affordable fashion items.

Effective December 15, Amazon will decrease the referral fees applied to clothes and accessories. For items priced up to 15 euros ($17.41) or 15 pounds ($19.79), the referral fee will drop from 7% to 5%. For fashion items priced between 15 and 20 euros or pounds, the fee will be reduced from 15% to 10%. This adjustment positions Amazon more competitively against platforms like Shein, which charges referral fees of 10% for its European Union sites and 12.24% for Britain, notably offering zero referral fees for new sellers during their first 30 days.

The fee reductions extend beyond apparel. From February 1, Amazon will cut referral fees for home products priced up to 20 euros or pounds from 15% to 8%. Additionally, referral fees will be reduced for categories including pet clothing, grocery, and vitamins. In a further bid to support its selling partners, Amazon will also decrease fulfilment fees for parcels by an average of 0.32 euros or 0.26 pounds in its German, French, Italian, Spanish, and British stores, effective December 15.

These adjustments underscore Amazon's response to the disruptive impact of players like Shein, which offers products such as tops for 3 euros and jeans for as little as 8.20 euros. Shein has successfully carved out market share from established European fast-fashion retailers and has increasingly challenged Amazon by expanding its marketplace to sell a diverse range of products, from duvet covers to vacuum cleaners. Amazon stated that these changes reflect its ongoing efforts to lower its cost to serve through operational improvements and innovation, passing greater savings directly to its selling partners.

Despite the heightened competition, Amazon remains the dominant e-commerce platform in key European markets, including Germany and France. The broader European e-commerce market is projected to experience substantial growth, with industry association Ecommerce Europe forecasting a 7% increase to reach a total revenue of 900 billion euros this year, highlighting the strategic importance of Amazon's proactive measures in this evolving landscape.
