Amazon's Ultra-Cheap Haul Program Expands Globally with New App

Amidst ongoing scrutiny faced by Chinese e-commerce platforms in Western markets, Amazon's equivalent ultra-low-price initiative has, to date, largely avoided similar criticism. Leveraging this context, the US retail behemoth is strategically broadening the reach of its "Haul" or "Bazaar" program – the branding of which varies by country – into an array of new territories. A significant development in this expansion is the introduction of a dedicated mobile application, streamlining access to this competitive shopping experience.

Previously, the "Haul" program had already seen a phased rollout across key markets including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Italy, Spain, and Australia. Concurrently, under the "Bazaar" moniker, the offering had successfully penetrated the Mexican, Saudi, and Emirati markets. Bolstering its global footprint, the program, now supported by its bespoke "Amazon Bazaar" mobile application, is extending its availability to Hong Kong, the Philippines, Taiwan, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Nigeria.

Amazon clarified that "Amazon Haul and Amazon Bazaar provide the same ultra-competitive shopping experience, with different names chosen to better reflect local linguistic and cultural preferences." The platform invites shoppers to explore a diverse range of fashion, home décor, and lifestyle products, with the majority of items being attractively priced at under $10. This emphasis on affordability is complemented by the significant role fashion plays, as the group frequently highlights clothing as one of the largest and most dynamic categories within its broader marketplace, even without disclosing specific sales breakdowns.

The "Haul" initiative was strategically conceived as a direct competitive response to the ascendancy of Chinese platforms such as Shein and Temu. To effectively draw in the Chinese manufacturers who are prominent on these rival sites, Amazon implemented a new policy from 2024. This allows these manufacturers the option to store their products in dedicated Chinese warehouses, facilitating immediate shipment upon order placement. This marked a notable deviation from Amazon's prior model, which necessitated Chinese sellers to route their merchandise through the company's Western-based warehouses.

The unveiling of the dedicated application for the "Haul" offering arrives at a particularly sensitive juncture for Amazon. The company recently confirmed a significant workforce reduction of 14,000 employees. These job cuts are largely attributed to the company's progressive integration and deployment of artificial intelligence technologies across various facets of its extensive organizational structure.
