Ames Watson Buys Claire's North America for $140 Million Aiming for Revitalization

Ames Watson, a privately held investment firm, officially announced on Friday its acquisition of Claire's North America business for a sum of $140 million. This strategic move aims to breathe new life into the struggling U.S. retail chain, which has faced significant challenges in recent times.

The Columbia-based firm has expressed a clear commitment to upholding Claire's long-standing heritage while simultaneously positioning the company for robust and sustained growth. According to a press release, Ames Watson's revitalization strategy will center on enhancing exclusivity, offering greater customization options, and fostering a stronger sense of cultural relevance for the brand. Lawrence Berger, partner and co-founder at Ames Watson, articulated the brand's unique appeal, stating, "Claire's is one of those rare brands that defines a stage of life - old enough to buy your first lip gloss, but still young enough to believe it could change your world."

Berger further emphasized the overwhelming passion associated with the Claire's brand, highlighting the firm's eagerness to involve the community as they embark on this new chapter. Ames Watson brings a strong track record to this acquisition, having successfully acquired Lids in 2019 and subsequently transforming it into a billion-dollar enterprise, demonstrating their capability in revitalizing and scaling retail businesses.

Founded in 1974, Claire's has long been a go-to youth-focused retailer, specializing in fashion accessories, jewelry, cosmetics, and related merchandise. However, the Chicago-headquartered retailer encountered substantial difficulties, filing for its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy in early August. This decision followed months of uncertainty regarding the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariff plans on the retailer’s complex global supply chain. At the time of its Chapter 11 petition, Claire’s reported liabilities and assets each ranging from $1 billion to $10 billion.

Tom Ripley, partner and co-founder at Ames Watson, whose extensive investment portfolio includes notable brands such as Champion, South Moon Under, Mitchell & Ness, Ebbets Field, Zygo, Hungry, and Margaux, underscored the human element in their turnaround strategy. "Every turnaround we've done begins with people," Ripley stated. He acknowledged Claire's "incredibly passionate field team," many of whom boast 20 years or more with the company, asserting that their dedication and loyalty will form the crucial foundation for this impending new phase of growth and transformation.
