Asda Lands Tech Veteran to Drive Digital Transformation
Asda, the UK’s value supermarket giant, has announced the appointment of Cal Corcoran as its new Group Chief Information Officer, effective January 5th. This key addition to the senior leadership team signals Asda’s continued focus on technological advancement and data optimization following its separation from Walmart.
Corcoran brings a remarkable 25+ years of experience leading IT initiatives across a diverse range of industries. His extensive background includes significant roles in “big tech, financial services, civil aviation, oil & gas, telecoms and aerospace and defence,” demonstrating a versatile skillset and adaptability to complex operational environments.
Prior to joining Asda, Corcoran held senior technology positions at globally recognized organizations such as Microsoft, Barclays, Gatwick Airport, BP, and Castrol. Asda highlighted his proven track record in delivering large-scale IT transformations, particularly within challenging and intricate settings, as a key factor in his appointment.
Allan Leighton, Asda’s Executive Chairman, emphasized the crucial role of data and technology in the company’s strategy. He stated that these elements are “a critical element of our business that enables us to show up for our customers in the ways they expect,” and that Corcoran’s arrival reinforces Asda’s commitment to growth as it looks towards 2026.
While Asda’s recent Q2 financial results presented challenges, and the crucial Christmas trading update is anticipated, the retailer is optimistic about the continued success of its George fashion and lifestyle brand. Corcoran will likely play a role in supporting George’s expansion, new product launches, and efforts to increase its market share within the fashion and lifestyle sectors.
