Axel Arigato and Alvin Armstrong fuse Scandinavian minimalism with vibrant artistry in new collection

Axel Arigato is set to launch its latest collaboration on November 13th, partnering with Brooklyn-based artist Alvin Armstrong. Armstrong, a multidisciplinary creative, is renowned for his bold, figurative paintings that vibrantly capture movement, rhythm, and color. This collaboration marks a harmonious fusion, with Axel Arigato stating that the resulting collection "bridges the brand’s Scandinavian minimalism with Armstrong’s expressive visual language." Adding a distinct local touch, the collection was developed with the input of the brand's London design team.

The collection meticulously explores color, texture, and motion, translating Armstrong’s signature brushwork and distinct tonal contrasts into an array of elevated ready-to-wear silhouettes, sneakers, and accessories. This extensive venture represents a significant commitment for Axel Arigato, spanning multiple product categories. Simultaneously, it marks a pivotal moment for Armstrong, signifying his inaugural collaboration of this magnitude, an "exploration of how his painting practice can translate into dimensional footwear and ready-to-wear design."

Armstrong collaborated closely with the brand’s designers in London, applying his artistic language in innovative ways and embracing the challenges of working beyond his traditional mediums of paint and canvas. Color serves as a central theme, with ochre, yellow, black, and blue featured prominently. These specific shades are directly inspired by Armstrong’s painting, *The Listening Skies*, which not only influenced the entire collection but also its accompanying campaign. Throughout the range, Armstrong’s "language of movement and expressive mark-making is distilled into sculptural shapes, textural interactions and confident palettes."

Individual pieces within the collection highlight this artistic translation. Notable items include a bold oversized brushback inside-out fleece sweater, distinguished by vibrant yellow stripes and accentuated frayed sleeves. A reversible chocolate brown fleece features a signature logo-lock up zipper, offering versatile styling. The collection also introduces a 100% silk dress shirt adorned with a custom reprographic of *The Listening Skies*, a white denim workwear co-ord featuring striking color-pop button details, and a knitted balaclava that seamlessly echoes the color palette and linear designs found across the collection.

Beyond the primary collection, Axel Arigato also announced a special initiative where Armstrong celebrates his profound love of music and its power to unite communities. This involves 100 individual hand-drawn artworks, each capturing jazz musicians in mid-performance. These expressive, painterly, and entirely unique pieces are lovingly hand-stitched onto blank ‘white canvas’ T-shirts. This offers enthusiasts the unique opportunity to own a wearable, one-of-a-kind artwork, meticulously and painstakingly created by the artist himself.

Completing the collaboration is the debut of a new Axel Arigato sneaker: the Squish. This "sculptural and playful" shoe reimagines familiar brand footwear codes, featuring exaggerated curves and a ‘squished’ gum sole integrated into a tactile upper. Handcrafted in Portugal from premium nubuck and suede, the Squish draws inspiration from skate culture, modern sculpture, and organic lines to create a distinctive, oversized silhouette. For this collaboration, the Squish is available in black/gum and blue/gum colorways, deliberately echoing the bold, expressive, and gestural lines characteristic of Armstrong’s artworks.
