Balenciaga Returns to Perfume with a Reimagined Classic and Audacious New Scents
Balenciaga is making a grand re-entry into the world of perfumery, embodying the elegant spirit of its founder with the launch of its first collection of ten distinctive fragrances. This ambitious project, spearheaded by luxury house owner Kering, marks a significant step towards a broader expansion into beauty, beginning with the resurrection and subtle reinterpretation of Balenciaga's historic perfume, Le Dix. The timing of this launch is strategically ideal, allowing the brand to reinforce its high-end image and underscore its rich heritage, particularly as it prepares to showcase the debut collection of its new artistic director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, at Paris Fashion Week on October 4th, following Demna's departure to Gucci.
The genesis of this olfactory venture lies in the rediscovery of Balenciaga's inaugural fragrance, "Le Dix," which Cristóbal Balenciaga himself meticulously crafted in 1947, a decade after establishing his fashion house in Paris. This iconic scent, once celebrated but subsequently forgotten, became the cornerstone of the brand's new perfume narrative. The journey to bring Le Dix back to life was a profound fifteen-year quest, led by the house's dedicated archivists. Their painstaking research ultimately culminated in the momentous rediscovery of a bottle containing the precious original essence, as detailed in a recent press release from Balenciaga.
With the original "Le Dix" formula in hand, an intensive process began to restore it as faithfully as possible, while simultaneously infusing it with modern relevance. Every detail, from the original bottle and packaging, was scrutinized and meticulously reproduced. The refillable bottles mirror the historic design, featuring a distinct globular glass stopper and a hand-tied ribbon, complemented by a sober black label. Even the outer box has been thoughtfully designed to appear aged, as if gently patinated by time, enhancing the sense of heritage. The fragrance itself has been revitalized through a sophisticated blend, combining a precious iris absolute with innovative isolated iris aldehydes, further enriched by violet leaf absolute and incense essential oils, creating a contemporary yet timeless aroma.
Accompanying the revitalized Le Dix are nine new individualized fragrances, each characterized by intensely colored juices. These new scents are described as "each expressing a bold clash between the mastery of French perfumery and the audacity of innovation," effectively bottling "Balenciaga couture." Their names are deeply rooted in the house's heritage and the personal story of its founder. For instance, "Getaria" draws inspiration from the Spanish coastline and Cristóbal Balenciaga's birthplace, while "Cristóbal" offers an "enigmatic and discreet, yet radiating gravity" scent. "No Comment" serves as a direct reference to the legendary silence the couturier famously maintained around his groundbreaking creations.
This ambitious perfume project was developed entirely by the Kering Beauté division, established by the Group in 2023, in close collaboration with Balenciaga's internal teams. This marks a shift from a previous licensing agreement signed in 2008 with the American Coty group for a perfume line, which ultimately expired without renewal, paving the way for Kering's in-house strategy.
The new Balenciaga fragrance collection officially goes on sale this September 10th. Pricing reflects its luxury positioning, with a 100 ml eau de parfum retailing at 260 euros, and a convenient travel spray available for 55 euros. To celebrate this significant launch, a dedicated perfumery has been inaugurated at 10 avenue George V, a historically resonant address where Cristóbal Balenciaga first established his fashion house upon arriving in France, and where the brand notably returned two years ago. This address also holds the significance of being the birthplace of the famous Le Dix perfume's name.
Beyond the flagship perfumery, the collection will be distributed through a curated selection of Balenciaga boutiques across Europe and North America, alongside the brand's official e-commerce platform. The label has also confirmed plans for a progressive global rollout, extending distribution to the Middle East, Asia, and other international markets in due course.
