Beaverbrooks posts loss despite improved gross profit margin amid tough market

UK jeweller Beaverbrooks has published its financial results for the year ending 1 March, revealing a decrease in revenue and a shift from profitability to a net loss. While turnover saw a decline, partly attributed to the prior year encompassing 53 weeks compared to 52 for the latest period, the company did report an improvement in its gross profit margin.

The family-owned firm's turnover decreased to £217.3 million, down from £228.65 million in the preceding year. Concurrently, gross profit also saw a dip, falling to £24.69 million from £25.74 million. Despite these reductions, the gross profit margin demonstrated a slight increase, rising to 11.36% from the previous year's 11.26%, indicating an improved efficiency in direct costs relative to sales.

Operating profit before discretionary payments stood at £6.9 million, a notable reduction from £11 million. These discretionary payments, which included performance-related remuneration and charitable contributions, further impacted the bottom line, with operating profit after these allowances decreasing to £1 million from £1.59 million in the prior period.

The company's profit before tax was recorded at £0.34 million, a significant drop from £1 million. After accounting for the impact of taxation, Beaverbrooks reported a net loss of £0.79 million for the period, a stark contrast to the marginal profitability achieved in the previous financial year.

Despite these challenging figures, the firm's directors expressed satisfaction with the company's performance, acknowledging the difficult operating environment. They highlighted that customers, colleagues, and suppliers were all "significantly impacted" by the escalating cost of living across the UK and the widespread effects of geopolitical uncertainty on supply chain expenses.

In response to the market conditions and as part of its long-term strategy, Beaverbrooks continued its significant investments in strategic marketing and its store portfolio throughout the period. This commitment included the successful opening of its third Loupe boutique, located in Preston, underscoring the jeweller's dedication to expansion and enhancing its retail presence.
