Bestseller Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Record Sales and Massive Global Expansion
Danish fashion giant Bestseller Group concluded an "exceptionally strong" financial year for 2024/25, marked by record sales, significant market expansion, and the largest investment in the company's history on the horizon. Despite prevailing consumer uncertainties, the group demonstrated robust growth during its 50th anniversary year, showing no signs of a downturn or stagnation across its global operations.
The company's turnover surged to a record DKK 38 billion (approximately EUR 5.1 billion), representing a 7% increase. This impressive performance was mirrored in its profitability, with profit before tax climbing 10% year-on-year to DKK 5.9 billion. Consequently, the EBIT margin saw an increase from 14.9% to 15.6%, while net profit for the year reached DKK 4.6 billion, underscoring a period of strong financial health and strategic success.
CEO and owner Anders Holch Povlsen hailed the financial year as a significant milestone, especially given its coincidence with the company's 50th anniversary. Reflecting on the journey since the first store opened in 1975, Povlsen emphasized that such growth and global reach were unimaginable at the outset. A key driver of this success was a substantial expansion of Bestseller's international retail footprint, with 359 new locations contributing to a network of over 2,800 stores across 47 countries worldwide. Retail revenue alone increased by 10% during the fiscal year.
Core brands Only and Jack & Jones were instrumental in driving growth. Jack & Jones opened more than 110 new stores and, in collaboration with womenswear brand JJXX, debuted an innovative multi-brand concept, notably with a 1,300 m² store on London's Oxford Street. The Only brand also saw remarkable expansion, growing its store network by 20% through over 200 new openings. To further diversify its extensive portfolio, Bestseller introduced the Rouge Edit womenswear line during Copenhagen Fashion Week in 2024/25 and expanded its kid's wear segment with Only & Sons Junior and Only Mini, bringing its total brand count to over 20, catering to diverse target groups.
Parallel to its brick-and-mortar expansion, Bestseller made strategic entries into four new markets across three continents: Kenya, Mongolia, Argentina, and Colombia. The group also intensified its presence in the United States, expanding its teams in Los Angeles and planning for an additional thirty new stores on the East Coast, signaling a focused effort on global market penetration.
Looking ahead, a major strategic initiative involves the planning of a new logistics center in the Netherlands, which is set to become the largest investment ever undertaken by the group. Further details regarding this significant project are expected to be announced in due course, highlighting Bestseller's commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and infrastructure.
Anders Holch Povlsen acknowledged the persistent challenges within the fashion industry but expressed satisfaction with the results achieved. He emphasized the importance of humility, recognizing that future years will demand continued hard work. Povlsen reiterated Bestseller's commitment to strategic investment in crucial areas such as logistics, innovation, and, most importantly, its employees. Concluding, he stated, "We are well-equipped to achieve even better results and realise our ambitions that go beyond our own company," underscoring the group's forward-looking approach and its dedication to making a broader impact.
