Better Cotton Unveils On-Product Labels Boosting Consumer Transparency

Better Cotton is set to enhance consumer transparency with the introduction of new on-product labelling in retail stores. This innovative labeling system will certify to consumers the precise proportion of Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) cotton contained within each item and will formally adopt the name 'BCI Cotton' for clarity. The initiative aims to provide verifiable information directly to the end-consumer, signifying a crucial step towards greater accountability in the textile supply chain.

Since its inception sixteen years ago, the Better Cotton Initiative has meticulously built a vast global network, encompassing 1.4 million approved cotton growers worldwide. These growers receive support in exchange for their steadfast commitment to a set of environmentally responsible practices, including the reduction of water, fertilizer, and pesticide use, alongside vital social practices focused on combating forced labor and child labor. The new on-product labeling is strategically designed to underscore this robust Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) positioning directly to the end consumer, ensuring that all involved farms, suppliers, retailers, and brands have been rigorously certified to Better Cotton standards by an independent third-party organization.

Commenting on this pivotal development, Nick Weatherill, CEO of BCI, emphasized the critical need for transparency and accountability in today’s evolving market. "At a time when sustainability claims are coming under increasing scrutiny, when global business pressures and environmental, social and governance (ESG) priorities are evolving, transparency and accountability are more crucial than ever," he stated. Weatherill highlighted that the new label reaffirms BCI’s unwavering commitment to both principles, as an integral part of its overarching mission to generate measurable impact and drive continuous improvement in sustainability throughout the cotton sector.

Better Cotton's influence in the global cotton market continues to expand significantly. The organization now proudly accounts for 23% of global cotton production, marking an increase from 22% just a year prior, with an impressive 5.6 million tonnes produced across fifteen countries during the 2023/24 season. In a broader context, cotton stood as the world’s second most-produced fiber in 2024, behind polyester, with 24.5 million tonnes harvested globally, despite a 19% decrease in total harvest. Notably, 34% of this global cotton production was certified as sustainable in that year, a significant rise from 28% in the preceding year, underscoring the growing industry commitment to more responsible practices.
