Boden Stages Remarkable Comeback with 19% Turnover Surge and Return to Profitability
JP Boden Holdings Limited Group, more commonly known as Boden, has announced a significant turnaround in its 2024 financial results, demonstrating robust growth following a challenging period in 2023. The company reported a substantial jump in turnover, a return to profitability, and an expansion of its customer base, indicating a strong rebound in its market performance.
Quantifying this success, Boden's group turnover surged by 19% to reach £362.8 million. This impressive sales growth directly translated into a return to profitability, with a pre-tax profit of £34.6 million, a dramatic swing from the £12.3 million loss reported in 2023. Post-tax profit also reflected this positive shift, coming in at £26.1 million compared to a £9.4 million loss the previous year. Alongside financial gains, active customers increased by 10% year-on-year, reaching 1.8 million, while the company's cash reserves grew by £46 million to £70.2 million.
The growth was broad-based, with all major markets contributing to the uplift. US sales saw a notable increase, rising from £133.2 million to £161.7 million. Similarly, UK and rest-of-world sales combined jumped from £171.3 million to £201.1 million. Key product categories were also strong performers, with US Womenswear recording its strongest year to date, particularly in dresses and knitwear. The company also experienced growth in Childrenswear and successfully reintroduced its Baby category.
Several strategic initiatives underpinned this resurgence. The expansion of third-party partnerships, including collaborations with Nordstrom in the US and Next in the UK, played a crucial role. Furthermore, the company achieved higher average order values and improved margins by strategically reducing discounting, reflecting a stronger brand appeal and customer loyalty.
Looking ahead, Boden anticipates continued positive momentum into 2025. First-half sales growth is projected at 9%, accompanied by a "significant increase" in profit. The company highlighted its "best season ever" for full-price womenswear, with double-digit sales growth in the US, a market that now accounts for nearly half of the very British brand's total sales. Investment in customer recruitment has already yielded over 300,000 new customers in the first half of the year, coupled with further growth in average order values.
In terms of operational enhancements, Boden made significant investments in a new website platform and customer service systems, which became live in January. These upgrades are designed to boost efficiency, improve service delivery, and facilitate new functionality. Despite this robust growth, the company remains focused on managing costs and cash "prudently" in light of ongoing global economic and trade uncertainties.
Leadership saw changes with Ben Dreyer appointed as the new CEO and joining the board, while Suzanne Foley, the CFO, also took a seat on the board. A major strategic move for the brand is the impending opening of its first US store in November. This 2,000 square foot space will be located at the Avalon Centre in Alpharetta, Atlanta, marking a significant milestone in Boden's US growth strategy.
Johnnie Boden, Founder and Creative Director, expressed his pride in the team's efforts, stating: “After a tricky few years, I’m so proud that the team has delivered a fantastic turnaround, returning Boden to growth and profitability. We’ve had a resoundingly positive response to our refreshed product ranges, especially in Womenswear. We have also acquired a lot of new customers, both in the UK and overseas. The business is in great shape to build on this momentum; the opening of our first US store in November will help us strengthen our presence in our fastest-growing market.”
