Bodycare Closes All Stores and Sells Brand After Decades on High Street
The familiar presence of UK beauty chain Bodycare is set to vanish entirely from the high street, as administrators confirmed on Monday the closure of its remaining 56 stores. This final decision will result in the loss of another 444 jobs, bringing an end to the physical retail operations of a brand that had been a fixture for decades.
This latest announcement follows previous rounds of closures, with 30 stores having been revealed to shut down just last week. In total, approximately 150 Bodycare shops have already ceased trading, leading to around 1,000 job losses. Despite these significant reductions, there had been lingering hopes that the company might manage to continue operating as a physical chain in some diminished form, prior to this definitive closure.
Bodycare initially entered administration earlier this month, a direct consequence of several challenging years following the global pandemic. This period contrasted sharply with its long history of financial success, as the chain had maintained profitability for many decades leading up to the Covid crisis, underscoring the severe impact of recent market conditions.
At its peak, before its eventual collapse, the company provided employment for as many as 1,500 individuals across its network. Currently, the administrators are actively exploring various options for the company's remaining assets, including the valuable Bodycare brand itself. This ongoing effort suggests a potential for the brand to continue in some capacity, possibly even as an online-only entity, with the long-term prospect of reopening physical stores should market conditions become more favorable.
Founded from a humble market stall over half a century ago, Bodycare boasted a commendable legacy of healthy profitability. Intriguingly, despite reporting losses in the aftermath of the pandemic, the company had reportedly been planning a stock market listing just last year, highlighting a stark contrast between its strategic ambitions and the ultimate financial pressures it faced.
