Boucheron Debuts Third Worldwide Flagship in Shanghai to Boost Asian Expansion
Boucheron is poised to open its first flagship boutique in China, situated in Shanghai's Xintiandi district. This third worldwide flagship follows the maison's established iconic addresses at 26 Place Vendôme in Paris and in Ginza, Tokyo. The launch signifies a major step in Boucheron's international expansion and forms part of the strategic growth plan in Asia, led by CEO Hélène Poulit-Duquesne since 2015.
Founded in 1858 by Frédéric Boucheron, the maison has grown through four generations of his direct descendants, establishing itself as a leading name in jewellery, high jewellery, and watchmaking. As the first jewellery house to open a boutique on Place Vendôme, Boucheron has maintained its legacy while expanding globally; it is now part of the Kering luxury group and operates more than 90 boutiques worldwide.
The new Shanghai flagship occupies a historic 19th-century shikumen building in the heart of the Xintiandi district. The 278-square-metre interior is designed around distinct themes: a winter garden inspired by 19th-century European greenhouses, a Chinese forest installation by artist Xiaojing Yan featured in the central display cases, and a bridal suite inspired by Yu Garden, a famous Shanghai landmark.
A staircase connects the main interior spaces to the VIP lounges, where the symbolic colors of both the maison and China are blended. These lounges showcase works by Jonathan Bréchignac and retain the original shikumen architecture, including exposed beams and brickwork. The spaces also feature works by Peng Yong and de Gournay wallpaper motifs inspired by historic Chinese landscapes.
The boutique also includes a dedicated space for showcasing Asian expertise and archival pieces, offering clients insight into Boucheron's historical ties with China. The internal flow of the boutique is designed according to Feng Shui principles to optimize the client journey and experience, integrating wood panelling, marble, and French-style furnishings in line with the maison's DNA. This opening reinforces Boucheron's strategy to strengthen its presence in China, where it already has 17 boutiques on the mainland, and to marry French heritage with local cultural elements to offer Asian clients a comprehensive retail and heritage experience.
