Breasts Baffle Brits: AI and Activewear Team Up to Get Girls Moving
A recent study highlights a significant challenge in UK girls' participation in sport and exercise, with nearly half of schoolgirls reporting that their breasts negatively impact their engagement. Compounding this issue, over 50% have never worn a sports bra during physical activity, leaving them vulnerable to discomfort and potential long-term issues. These alarming statistics, gathered by the University of Portsmouth's Research Group in Breast Health, have prompted a proactive response from Brarista, an AI-powered bra fitting platform, and Boobydoo, a prominent British activewear brand.
Together, Brarista and Boobydoo are embarking on a crucial mission: to dismantle this critical barrier to women's health. Their joint initiative aims to bring professional-level fitting expertise directly to the next generation of breast health shoppers, ensuring that discomfort no longer prevents active participation. By merging advanced AI technology with deep expert fitting knowledge, Brarista is tackling the pervasive problem of incorrect bra sizing, which an estimated 90% of consumers experience.
Brarista's innovative platform offers round-the-clock personalised fitting guidance, tailored product recommendations, and essential bra education. Bella Trang Ngo, founder of Brarista, underscores the urgency of their work: "We're witnessing a generation of girls dropping out of sport at twice the rate of boys by age 14, and breast-related discomfort is a significant factor that's been overlooked for too long. Our technology empowers brands like Boobydoo to ensure every woman finds the right fit, removing barriers to physical activity and helping more women experience the benefits of sport."
Further research from the University of Portsmouth reinforces the scale of the problem. It reveals that 46% of UK schoolgirls aged 11-18 encounter breast-related obstacles to sport participation, a figure that dramatically climbs to 63% for those with larger breasts. The issue extends beyond school-aged girls, with 17% of adult women citing breast discomfort as a barrier to physical activity. Among these, the inability to find the right sports bra is consistently ranked as the most influential breast-related impediment.
The research also sheds light on the physiological aspect, showing that breasts can move up to 19cm during high-impact activities. Despite this considerable movement and the obvious need for support, a staggering 75% of women have never had a professional sports bra fitting. This gap in awareness and access to proper fitting underscores the vital role that initiatives like those from Brarista and Boobydoo play in promoting healthier, more active lives for women and girls.
