Britons Embrace Self-Gifting This Holiday Season Driven by Younger Generations

This festive season, a significant shift in consumer behaviour is taking centre stage, as Britons increasingly prioritize self-gifting. Challenging the traditional notion of giving solely to others, new research from eBay Advertising UK reveals a personal twist on the spirit of generosity: individuals are putting themselves at the top of their own gift lists. This trend is particularly pronounced among younger generations, reshaping expectations for retailers during the crucial Black Friday and Christmas shopping periods.

The comprehensive survey, which polled over 2,000 Christmas shoppers, indicates that a notable 29% of consumers are inclined to spend more on themselves than on friends or family during the holiday season. This figure dramatically escalates among Millennials, with a striking 50% admitting to this self-indulgent habit. For retailers in specific sectors, this presents a clear opportunity: fashion and accessories lead the self-gifting categories, both hitting 31%, closely followed by beauty and wellness products at 27%. This highlights a growing desire for personal treats that contribute to self-care and individual style.

Beyond personal indulgence, broader insights suggest a robust festive spending outlook overall. Shoppers are planning to loosen their purse strings this year, with 32% intending to spend more than in the previous year – a substantial increase from earlier projections. This inclination to splurge is even more evident among younger cohorts: 56% of Millennials and 51% of Gen Zers anticipate increasing their festive budgets. This collective upward trend suggests a strong desire to "go big" on holiday shopping, benefiting both personal desires and gifts for loved ones.

Millennials, in particular, emerge as the power spenders of the season. Last year, their average Christmas budget soared to £993.77, significantly outpacing the UK average of £779. In contrast, Generation X is exhibiting a more cautious approach, with 26% planning to decrease their spending. This distinct generational divide in festive attitudes underscores the importance of tailored marketing strategies that resonate with varying financial outlooks and priorities across different age groups.

When it comes to the practicalities of holiday shopping, convenience and price remain paramount. Marketplaces are proving to be key destinations, with 38% of shoppers citing time-saving as a primary reason for using them. The ability to purchase gifts for multiple recipients in a single place appeals to 33% of consumers, while 31% are actively driven by the promise of better deals. Critically, half of all shoppers (51%) admit to frequently waiting for promotions or discount codes before finalizing purchases, positioning marketplaces that can deliver timely and relevant offers for a distinct advantage in converting browsing into sales.

The influence of advertising cannot be overstated in this dynamic retail landscape. The research unequivocally demonstrates the decisive role online advertisements play in shaping consumer purchase behaviour, with over half (56%) of shoppers confirming that online ads have directly impacted their buying decisions during the Christmas period. This highlights the necessity for brands and retailers to invest in strategic and well-placed digital campaigns to capture shopper attention and intent.

Billy Mills, Senior Director of Enterprise Seller Development & Brands at eBay, aptly summarizes the evolving landscape: “This peak season isn’t just about gifting – it’s about recognizing the moments shoppers choose for themselves. We’re seeing a clear shift, especially among Millennials, towards more personal, feel-good spending.” He emphasizes the significant opportunity for sellers to adapt their approach, advising them to position products not merely as thoughtful gifts, but as meaningful purchases that resonate deeply with consumers’ desires for self-reward and personal satisfaction.
