Brown and Grey Trainers Dominate Autumn Footwear Trends According to JD Sports Data
As one of the UK's leading names in trainer sales, JD Sports offers invaluable insights into the shifting landscape of footwear trends. Their recent assessment of key autumn styles, based on August's search demand data compared to July, reveals significant movements in consumer preferences as the weather cools down. The findings point to a definitive shift towards specific colours and classic silhouettes, indicating a move towards more grounded and versatile fashion choices.
The most prominent trend emerging for autumn is the undeniable surge in demand for brown trainers. Specifically, searches for brown Adidas Campus models have skyrocketed by an impressive 256%. This isn't an isolated incident; brown as a general colour is becoming a dominant force, with Google search data for the hue seeing a 176% increase month-on-month. Further reinforcing this trend, searches for brown Adidas Spezial trainers also saw a substantial 206% rise, complementing the spike in Campus interest. Not to be outdone, Nike's Dunk collection has also embraced the brown wave, with searches for these models climbing by 115%.
While brown is leading the charge, grey is proving to be another highly sought-after colour this season. Data shows a significant uptick in searches for grey trainers, with the Adidas Spezial in grey experiencing a remarkable 233% increase in August compared to July. The Adidas Campus in grey also saw a healthy 36% rise in demand. Nike collections are similarly benefiting from the grey trend, with search demand for the P-6000 model up by 72% and the Dunk collection in grey increasing by 91%, solidifying its position as a versatile and stylish autumn choice.
Beyond the colour palette, specific models from other prominent brands are also capturing consumer interest. New Balance is witnessing strong growth for its 740 model, which saw a 102% increase in searches. Its popular 9060 model also experienced a notable 63% boost in demand, indicating a continued appetite for New Balance's distinctive style and comfort.
While earthy tones dominate, other colours are also making their mark this autumn. Red, for instance, has seen a considerable 64% month-on-month jump in searches. Red Converse trainers, in particular, saw an 87% increase in interest, while Puma’s Speedcat in red climbed by 77%. Green is also gaining traction, with Adidas Spezial searches in green rising by 38%. Even yellow is finding a niche, as demonstrated by a 9% lift in searches for the yellow Puma Speedcat.
A JD spokesperson summarized these trends, stating, “This season, we’re seeing a clear shift in how people are shopping for trainers. Earthy tones like brown and grey are dominating, reflecting a move toward more grounded, versatile styles that still make a statement. Whether it’s a classic Adidas silhouette or a bold Nike drop, customers are looking for footwear that fits seamlessly into layered, autumn looks.” This sentiment underscores a broader shift towards practical yet fashionable footwear that complements the layered aesthetics of autumn fashion.
