Brunello Cucinelli Shares Plunge on Russia Operations Allegations

Shares in the renowned Italian cashmere brand, Brunello Cucinelli, experienced a significant decline in early Friday trade, falling as much as 9%. This downturn extended losses from Thursday, triggered by accusations from short-seller Morpheus Research. The research firm alleged that Brunello Cucinelli had misled investors regarding its business operations in Russia, a claim the luxury company has vehemently denied.

The company's stock plummeted to 77.6 euros, marking its lowest point since December 2023. While the shares later pared some losses, trading down 3.5% at 82.1 euros around 8:30 a.m. GMT, the initial impact was substantial. Brunello Cucinelli had previously been considered robust against the broader slowdown affecting the luxury goods sector, largely due to its exclusive high-end market positioning. However, the recent events have seen the stock's value drop nearly 50% from its record high achieved in February.

Morpheus Research, which publicly stated it has shorted Brunello Cucinelli's shares, is among a growing number of funds betting against the company. This heightened speculative activity contributed to a 17% loss in the stock's value on Thursday following the report's release. For context, shorting involves borrowing a company's shares, selling them, and then buying them back at a lower price to profit from the difference. Data from market analytics firm Ortex indicates a sharp rise in the estimated short interest in Brunello Cucinelli—the proportion of outstanding shares held by short sellers—climbing from approximately 4% in early August to over 10% this week.

The crux of Morpheus Research's report centered on allegations that Brunello Cucinelli continued to serve Russian clients despite European Union sanctions on luxury goods. In response to these claims, the company issued a statement asserting that any products shipped to Russia were "within the limits set by the European Union." Independent verification of these claims by Reuters could not be immediately confirmed, adding a layer of uncertainty to the ongoing dispute.

In light of the unfolding situation, analysts at Bernstein advised Brunello Cucinelli to initiate "damage limitation asap to protect its reputation with customers and investors alike." These allegations present a fresh challenge to Italy’s high-end fashion industry, which is already contending with a series of pressures. These include the impact of U.S. import tariffs and ongoing domestic investigations related to worker exploitation, making the current controversy a particularly sensitive issue for the sector.
