Buckingham Palace to Unveil Queen Elizabeth II's Unprecedented Fashion Journey

Buckingham Palace is set to host an unprecedented exhibition next year, delving into the profound fashion legacy of Queen Elizabeth II across her remarkable 70-year reign. Titled "Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style," the exhibition will offer an intimate glimpse into the sartorial journey of the late monarch, whom UK designer Erdem Moralioglu described as "a snapshot of a very long life, a life of duty, and in so many ways it's a time capsule." Moralioglu added that the collection "captures a very specific and important moment in history."

Scheduled to open in April 2025 at The King's Gallery, Buckingham Palace, the exhibition will feature approximately 200 items of clothing worn by the Queen over her 96 years, with half of these pieces being displayed for the very first time. Beyond the garments, visitors will also have the rare opportunity to view various sketches, some of which include personal annotations by the designers and even by Queen Elizabeth II herself, according to a statement from the Royal Collection.

The significance of Queen Elizabeth's influence on British fashion is a central theme, underscored by contributions from contemporary designers. Erdem Moralioglu, alongside Richard Quinn and Christopher Kane, will contribute pieces to the exhibition. Richard Quinn highlighted her "huge impact on British fashion," noting that the Queen "always shone a light on British designers, highlighting the relevance and significance of British fashion across the world." Christopher Kane echoed this sentiment, stating that "her garments tell the story of Britain and its changing identity through fashion."

Among the many treasures on display will be historically significant pieces such as the apple-green evening gown designed by Norman Hartnell, famously worn for a state banquet at the UK embassy in Washington in 1957 for then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Hartnell's iconic designs for the Queen's wedding dress and her coronation gown will also be featured, alongside a bridesmaid's dress she wore back in 1934. The exhibition will also present practical tailored items from the Queen's private wardrobe, including riding clothes and her distinctive scarves, showcasing the breadth of her personal style.

An intriguing and "strikingly modern for the era" item promised by the Royal Collection is a clear plastic raincoat crafted by couturier Hardy Amies in the 1960s, further illustrating the Queen's diverse and sometimes innovative wardrobe choices. Curator Caroline de Guitaut aptly summarized the collection, stating, "Queen Elizabeth II's wardrobe was a masterclass in symbolism, tailoring and British craftsmanship." This comprehensive exhibition will run from April 10, 2025, until October 18, 2026. Tickets for this unique historical and fashion event went on sale on Tuesday, inviting the public to explore the sartorial legacy of the monarch who passed away in September 2022.
