Claire's Saved From Collapse by Modella Capital Acquisition
Retail giant Claire's, known for its accessories, recently faced significant financial challenges, entering administration in the UK and Ireland with an initial debt of at least £12 million owed to unsecured creditors. Among those on the list of companies awaiting payment was property giant Landsec, highlighting the widespread impact of the collapse.
Despite filing for administration in August, a crucial turnaround occurred at the end of September when Modella Capital stepped in to acquire the retailer. This strategic buyout from administration proved to be a lifeline, successfully safeguarding 156 stores and preserving approximately 1,000 jobs. However, the deal did not extend to all operations, leaving the remaining 145 stores and their employees outside of the acquisition's scope.
According to documents reviewed by The Times, the acquisition by Modella Capital was finalized for a sum of £3.6 million. A significant portion of this, £1.4 million, was subsequently reinjected into Claire's to assist in addressing its outstanding debts, demonstrating Modella's commitment to stabilizing the business post-acquisition.
At the time of its collapse, unsecured creditors, including a diverse group of suppliers and landlords, were owed a reported £11.9 million. This figure is, however, projected to increase as additional claims are anticipated. Specific examples of creditors included Landsec, with an outstanding amount of £14,951, and logistics provider Hermes, owed £38,355.
Administrator Interpath has indicated an expectation to repay a portion of the money owed to unsecured creditors, though the precise amount is still under assessment. The total assets made available for these unsecured creditors were estimated to be around £8 million. Meanwhile, secondary preferential creditors, notably HM Revenue & Customs, held claims totaling £5.2 million, which are anticipated to be settled in full.
