Claire's Spain Files for Insolvency Amidst Global Restructuring and Store Closures
The accessories and jewellery chain Claire's is continuing its significant global restructuring, marked by a systematic reduction of its international footprint. Following a bankruptcy filing in the United States earlier this summer, the company has now added Spain to the growing list of markets grappling with the repercussions of its global crisis. This move places Spain alongside the UK, Ireland, and other European subsidiaries that have previously initiated insolvency proceedings, indicating a widespread financial challenge for the group. This latest development comes only weeks after Claire's completed the sale of its North American business to the investment firm Ames Watson.
Specifically in Spain, Claire's Accessories Spain voluntarily filed for insolvency proceedings last September. An order issued by Madrid's Court No 12 confirmed the petition, citing the company's "inability to pay all debts falling due imminently" and "the absence of refinancing" as primary factors, which together reflect a state of insolvency, according to reports by the online daily El Español. This formal declaration underscores the severe financial pressures facing the Spanish arm of the retail giant.
In response to the insolvency application, Convenia Profesional has been appointed as the insolvency administrator for Claire's Accessories Spain. The administrator has been given a two-month period to thoroughly report on the company's current financial situation, assess its long-term viability, and ultimately determine the future of the stores that remain operational. In parallel with these investigative steps, the company has already commenced a liquidation phase, signaling the seriousness of its financial distress and the likelihood of further closures.
Claire's Spanish subsidiary, which was incorporated in 2003 and began its retail operations in 2005, has experienced a dramatic reduction in its scale. According to the most recent available data from January 31, 2024, the company once operated 116 stores across Spain and employed 372 people. However, its network has been severely curtailed in recent months, with the company currently operating a mere 12 stores, predominantly concentrated in the capital city of Madrid, illustrating a stark contraction from its former presence.
Beyond Spain, Claire's has adopted a strategy of divestment in other affected international markets. In the United States, the company undertook significant measures, closing 300 stores and selling approximately 1,000 locations to Ames Watson for a reported US$140 million. Similar transactions have been executed in various other markets, including Canada, Germany, France, Austria, and Switzerland. Notably, in the UK and Ireland, Modella Capital acquired a total of 156 Claire's stores for US$100 million, highlighting a consistent pattern of shedding assets and reducing direct operational exposure in multiple regions.
