Columbia Sportswear Sales Rise on International Strength Despite US Slump

Columbia Sportswear Company has reported its third-quarter financial results, revealing a 1 percent increase in total sales to $943.4 million. This modest overall growth was primarily driven by robust international sales, which successfully offset a significant decline in its U.S. domestic market. Despite the uptick in sales, the company's net income for the period saw a substantial decrease compared to the previous year, highlighting mixed performance across its global operations.

A closer look at the geographical breakdown shows a challenging environment in the U.S. market, where sales fell by 4 percent to $546.7 million. In contrast, international segments demonstrated considerable strength. Revenues in Latin America and Asia Pacific collectively rose by 6 percent to $143.5 million. The Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region experienced the most significant surge, with sales climbing an impressive 16 percent. Canada also contributed positively, recording a 6 percent increase in revenues.

Brand-specific performance within the Columbia Sportswear portfolio varied. The flagship Columbia brand achieved sales of $804 million, representing a 1 percent increase. Sorel, another key brand, saw revenues jump by 10 percent to $81 million. PrAna also contributed positively with sales up 6 percent to $30.4 million. However, these gains were partially offset by a 5 percent decline in sales for the Mountain Hardwear brand.

Despite the slight increase in overall sales, the company's profitability declined during the three months ending September 30. Net income fell to $52 million, or $0.95 per diluted share. This stands in stark contrast to the comparable period in 2024, when net income was $90.2 million, or $1.56 per diluted share, indicating increased operational costs or other financial pressures impacting the bottom line.

Tim Boyle, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Columbia Sportswear, commented on the results, attributing the third-quarter performance to the "sustained momentum in our international business." He specifically highlighted the "double-digit percent sales growth in our Europe-direct markets," emphasizing that this strong international showing aligns with the Columbia brand's strategy to connect with younger and more active consumers, a core tenet of their Accelerate Growth Strategy.

Addressing the U.S. market challenges, Boyle stated, "In the U.S., we are focused on revitalizing the Columbia brand through our Accelerate Growth Strategy." He pointed to the recent launch of their new brand platform, 'Engineered for Whatever,' as a major milestone designed to celebrate outdoor adventure and rekindle the brand’s "irreverent spirit from the '80s and '90s." Boyle expressed optimism regarding the "overwhelmingly positive" early response and outlined plans for "a robust pipeline of differentiated activations and other media investments during the important holiday sales period ahead" to build on this momentum.

Looking forward, Columbia Sportswear Company has provided its forecast for full-year net sales. The company anticipates net sales to range between $3.33 billion and $3.37 billion, which would represent a sales decline of 1 percent to flat compared to its 2024 figure of $3.37 billion.
