Converse Taps Nike Veteran Chavon Webster to Lead Global Footwear and Design Amidst Brand Revitalization Efforts
Converse has announced the appointment of Chavon Webster as its new Vice President of Global Footwear and Design. This significant leadership change comes as the iconic brand looks to bolster its product innovation and market presence. Webster, who previously held senior positions at Nike, brings a wealth of experience in footwear design and lifestyle categories.
Webster's career trajectory showcases a strong background in the athletic and lifestyle footwear industry. She initially joined Nike in February 2022 as the Director of Kids’ Lifestyle Footwear, quickly advancing to Senior Director of Women’s Sport and Training Footwear by December 2023. Prior to her tenure at Nike, Webster spent nearly eight impactful years at New Balance, where her roles spanned lifestyle apparel and footwear, including a key position as Senior Project Manager for Cultural Moments. Her diverse experience across various consumer segments positions her well to lead Converse's global design initiatives.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the new role, Webster shared on LinkedIn, “Truly overjoyed to join the Converse family as vice president, global footwear and design. It is an honor to lead this incredible team as we continue to deepen our relationships with consumers, fuel product innovation, and accelerate our growth.” For this new chapter, Webster will be relocating to Boston, a strategic move that aligns with Converse's operational base.
Webster's appointment is set against a backdrop of significant restructuring within Nike, its parent company, under the leadership of new CEO Elliott Hill. Hill’s "sport-first" strategy involves a reorientation of teams around specific sport-obsessed consumer groups such as running, soccer, and football. As part of this comprehensive overhaul, Nike recently confirmed plans to reduce its corporate workforce by less than 1% to streamline operations and enhance focus.
A crucial element of Hill’s broader strategy for Nike’s portfolio is a renewed emphasis on Converse. The brand has faced considerable headwinds, enduring eight consecutive quarters of declining revenues. In 2024, Converse's contribution to Nike’s overall sales dipped to less than 4%, a notable decrease from the consistent 5–7% range it maintained after Nike began reporting Converse’s results separately in 2012, highlighting the urgent need for revitalization.
This leadership change at Converse follows other key appointments aimed at strengthening the brand. In July, Aaron Cain, who previously served as Nike’s Vice President and General Manager of Men’s, was promoted to CEO of Converse. These strategic executive shifts underscore Nike’s commitment to rejuvenating Converse and leveraging its potential to contribute more significantly to the company's performance.
