Coty Sells Final Wella Stake, Shifts Focus to Fragrances
Beauty conglomerate Coty Inc. announced Friday the completion of the sale of its remaining 25.8% stake in haircare brand Wella to investment firm KKR for $750 million. This move marks the final step in Coty’s divestiture of Wella, a process initiated in 2020 as part of a broader strategy to reshape its portfolio and enhance value.
Under the terms of the agreement, Coty will retain a significant financial interest in Wella’s future success. Specifically, the company is entitled to receive 45% of the proceeds generated from any future sale of the brand or an initial public offering (IPO), but only after KKR has achieved its preferred return on investment. Coty intends to utilize the majority of the $750 million in proceeds to reduce its existing debt burden.
The sale of the Wella stake is a key component of Coty’s ongoing strategic overhaul. The company initiated this plan in 2020 with the aim of streamlining operations and maximizing the potential of its remaining brands. This year, Coty has also undertaken a review of its beauty business, potentially leading to the sale of popular brands like Rimmel and CoverGirl.
This strategic shift reflects a deliberate effort to refocus Coty’s resources on its core strength: fragrances. The company is responding to sustained weakness in the color cosmetics market and prioritizing growth in the fragrance segment, where it holds licensing agreements with prestigious labels such as Gucci, Chloé, and Burberry.
Despite these strategic moves, Coty has faced financial headwinds this year, with its shares experiencing a near 50% decline in value. Founded in Paris in 1904, Coty currently boasts a market capitalization of approximately $2.8 billion, according to data from LSEG.
