Decathlon Fuels Berlin Expansion with Two New Compact Stores
Decathlon is significantly bolstering its presence in the German market with the upcoming launch of two new compact stores in Berlin this December. The French sporting goods retailer is strategically expanding its footprint, with these latest additions focusing on a curated selection of urban sports and travel gear, seamlessly integrated with advanced digital services to enhance the customer experience.
The first of these highly anticipated openings in the German capital is scheduled for December 12 at Spandau Arcaden. This will be swiftly followed by the second launch on December 19 at Berlin Central Station. Notably, with the inauguration of the Central Station outlet, Decathlon will reach a significant milestone, marking its tenth store in the vibrant Berlin region.
These two new retail spaces have been meticulously designed to thrive in high-traffic environments, specifically catering to locations known for extreme footfall. Consequently, their product assortments are thoughtfully tailored to meet the diverse needs of commuters, travelers passing through, and the local residents who frequent these bustling areas.
At the Spandau Arcaden location, encompassing 400 square meters, Decathlon aims to capitalize on its direct proximity to the ICE station, positioning the store as a convenient gateway to the adjacent pedestrian zone. To further enhance convenience for shoppers, the center will be equipped with "Locker" pick-up stations, streamlining the online order fulfillment process.
The Berlin Central Station store, sprawling across 500 square meters, offers a unique advantage within the city's retail landscape. Upon its opening, Decathlon will become the sole sports retailer in Berlin providing Sunday opening hours, a considerable benefit for travelers and city dwellers seeking sports equipment on weekends.
Commenting on the rapid growth, Stefan Kaiser, development and real estate director at Decathlon Germany, stated, "Our expansion is in full swing. These openings in Berlin perfectly demonstrate our strategic flexibility." Kaiser further elaborated on the company's adaptable approach, explaining, "We go where the people are. That could be a 3,000-square-metre partner store, such as the one in Nuremberg, or indeed 500 square metres at one of Germany's busiest railway stations." This aggressive expansion strategy underpins Decathlon's ambitious objective to operate a total of 150 stores across Germany by the year 2027.
