Denim's Green Revolution: Natural Dyes Promise a Cleaner Future

The textile industry's dyeing and finishing stages bear the heaviest carbon footprint, accounting for a significant 36% of its total impact, surpassing even spinning. This stark reality places a critical spotlight on eco-responsibility, particularly within the denim sector, where specialists are actively developing sustainable alternatives to traditional indigo and other chemical pigments.

At the recent Denim Première Vision show in Milan, U.S. company Chloris introduced Classean Blue, a groundbreaking natural pigment. Founder Lei Seun clarified that this isn't indigo, but rather a compound discovered in 1890, now produced through the fermentation of waste from the sugar and maize industries. With its first industrial production unit launched in China last year, Chloris’s natural pigment boasts a remarkable 65% reduction in carbon impact and 50% less heat consumption compared to chemical colorants, effectively addressing environmental concerns.

Italian company Officina 39, with two decades dedicated to refining sustainable processes, also champions innovation. Director Andrea Venier emphasizes that "developing new technologies has become part of our DNA." Their proprietary Recycrom process transforms pre- and post-consumer textile waste into colored powder without chemical synthesis, with just 100 kilos of material capable of coloring 5,000 tonnes of fabric, or 6,000 pairs of trousers. Additionally, Officina 39 offers Zero PP, a laser- and ozone-based alternative to potassium permanganate (PP) for faded effects, though Venier notes the challenge of scaling new technologies quickly to meet industrial demand.

This sentiment regarding the need for time to scale is echoed by French designer Emily Gubbay, a Central Saint Martins graduate, whose Infinity Blue process is garnering attention. This entirely natural method recovers indigo from end-of-life denim and can also be used for fading without damaging the material, with the core process reportedly taking only 30 minutes. Infinity Blue is currently seeking industrial partners, particularly yarn-dyeing specialists, as Gubbay believes the solution ultimately belongs with them, navigating the industry's desire for immediate, large-scale deployment.

Lucia D'Angelo Maddaleno, export manager at Montega Chemical Solutions, also observes brands' growing demand for mineral pigments and natural dyes. For 40 years, Montega has focused on textile treatments and apparel. While supporting the shift to responsible finishes, they promote chlorine activators as an alternative to caustic soda. However, Maddaleno also highlights the inherent limitations of natural dyeing, such as color fastness and ensuring shade consistency across large fabric lengths, which brands must acknowledge when pursuing natural solutions.

The denim industry's pursuit of greater responsibility is not new, evolving since the questioning of sandblasting fifteen years ago. Yet, manufacturers currently face economic headwinds that test these ambitions. Andrea Venier notes the difficult market conditions globally, but observes that some brands remain committed to changing their approach, even viewing it as an opportunity to differentiate themselves. Lei Seun of Chloris adds that their move to industrial scale allows them to match the prices of conventional pigments, and their product's compatibility with existing indigo dyeing machines helps convince brands to step out of their comfort zone, with evolving Western regulations providing further incentive.
