Dunhill Faces Losses Despite Major Investment, Sparks Creative Revival

Luxury goods group Richemont’s UK arm, Alfred Dunhill Ltd, has reported continued losses for the financial year ending March, despite significant investment from its parent company. While company-specific reports don’t always reflect a brand’s global performance, the figures reveal a concerning trend for the iconic menswear label.

Dunhill’s revenue decreased from £43.8 million to £38.6 million year-on-year. This decline was accompanied by a widening operating loss, increasing from £47.1 million to £59.3 million. The net loss for the year also grew, reaching £45.2 million compared to £38.5 million in the previous 12 months.

Despite being part of the larger Richemont group, the UK-registered Dunhill company maintains responsibility for the brand’s overall strategy, including global marketing direction and product design. To support this, and to fuel future development, Richemont Holdings (UK) Ltd injected £130 million into the company via a share issue.

The report offered limited detail regarding the investment’s specific allocation, but confirmed the company’s ongoing strategy is to “reinforce the positioning of Dunhill as a leading luxury brand for men.” Recent actions suggest this is indeed the focus, with notable changes in leadership and positive reception to new collections.

In September, Matthew Ives was appointed CEO, bringing with him a wealth of experience as a Dunhill veteran and, most recently, as SVP chief commercial officer of De Beers London. He succeeded Andrew Holmes, who served as interim CEO following the departure of Laurent Malecaze, who was moved to lead Richemont’s Chloé brand.

Despite the financial losses, Dunhill has garnered significant praise for its recent creative output. Industry experts, including Harrods’ fashion buying director Simon Longland, highlighted the brand’s collections as among the strongest of the recent men’s fashion month in June. This positive feedback has been consistent since Simon Holloway assumed the role of design director in spring 2023.
