Essentiel Antwerp: Colorful Creativity Fuels Global Growth Amidst Market Challenges

Founded in 1999 in Antwerp by Esfan Eghtessadi and Inge Onsea, Essentiel Antwerp emerged as a vibrant antidote to the prevailing minimalist and monochrome fashion trends. The label quickly distinguished itself with its fresh, original, and sophisticated style, becoming renowned for its unique prints and bold colour combinations. Eghtessadi, a Franco-Iranian-Belgian and son of designer Nicole Cadine, was immersed in the fashion world from an early age, surrounded by fabrics, sketches, and collections. Onsea, whose mother cherished vintage clothing, brought a unique perspective shaped by her experience as a model and five years living in India, a country that profoundly inspired her with its rich colours, intricate printed patterns, and quirky sartorial combinations.

Despite an "unsettled and complex" global market context, Essentiel Antwerp is demonstrating robust financial health and steady growth. Esfan Eghtessadi reported that the label achieved a revenue of €64 million in 2024, marking a significant 14.5% increase over 2023. Looking ahead, the company anticipates solid, double-digit growth for 2025, buoyed by strategic new business initiatives and its inherent ability to generate positive organic performance, even amidst current market challenges. This consistent upward trajectory is a testament to the dedication and commitment of its entire staff.

Essentiel Antwerp’s comprehensive ready-to-wear collections and full accessories line are produced across a global network, with manufacturing partners in China, Europe, India, and Africa. Eghtessadi emphasizes the importance of long-standing collaborations, with many suppliers having worked with the brand for over two decades. This careful selection of producers, chosen for their specific skills best suited to each garment’s requirements, ensures the preservation of a strong brand identity and delivers the high craftsmanship quality that defines the label’s most iconic items. Furthermore, Essentiel Antwerp is deeply committed to strengthening its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) performance and enhancing sustainability throughout its value chain, implementing rigorous due diligence, supplier audits, attentive materials selection, and frequent reviews of processes, particularly concerning transportation and packaging.

The label maintains an extensive global presence, distributed through 752 multibrand stores across 40 countries, alongside its 40 monobrand stores, 32 of which are directly operated. Its primary markets, encompassing all distribution channels, include Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, and France. Notably, Essentiel Antwerp has achieved exceptional results in the wholesale channel in Italy and the USA. Italy, accounting for approximately 8% of its wholesale business, is a key strategic market targeted for comprehensive brand experience development across physical and digital channels. The recent launch of its Italian e-shop in March 2025 has yielded promising results, with site visits growing by 74% and online sales increasing 3.5-fold within four months. A brand awareness initiative in May, featuring a kiosk in Milan, further boosted visibility and sales performance in the region.

Essentiel Antwerp's overall direct retail performance is solid, with sales increasing by 6% since January. The label is set for further expansion, with the opening of its second Parisian store scheduled for early November, and a comprehensive 2026 expansion plan designed to amplify its presence in Europe’s major cities. Currently employing 300 staff, the company anticipates increasing its workforce to align with its growth rate and expansion plans. Recruitment efforts will focus on acquiring new skills necessary to support ongoing business expansion and innovation, responding proactively to evolving market needs and emerging consumer trends.

Eghtessadi highlights that the brand’s stability is underpinned by its unwavering commitment to quality, creativity, and affordability, values that consistently resonate with and inspire its customers. He firmly believes that fashion must retain its power to make people dream and expresses confidence in the industry's ability to navigate current challenges, including the impact of tariffs. The brand, like many others, has been affected by these trade barriers, and the ongoing challenge lies in adapting strategies without penalizing customers while continuing to foster growth. The advertising campaign for Essentiel Antwerp’s Fall/Winter 2025-26 collection, titled "Paris s’éveille" (Paris awakens), encapsulates this spirit. The collection showcases a sophisticated grunge aesthetic, elevated by ironic touches, refined layering, tailored constructions, and starkly contrasting materials, featuring an eclectic blend of deconstructed skirts and shirts, thin ties, faux-fur looks, pearls, lace, and sequins. Check, snakeskin, and camo prints inject a rock 'n' roll vibe into a vibrant palette of bright red, electric blue, and dark green, perfectly embodying the brand's distinctive and imaginative style.
