Europe's E-commerce Giants Face New Challengers as Cross-Border Sales Soar

The latest rankings for Europe's largest cross-border sales sites in the fashion, beauty, and luxury sectors highlight a dynamic landscape where established giants maintain their lead while emerging players make significant strides. Amazon, Notino, and Swarovski continue to dominate their respective markets. However, this edition of the Cross-Border Commerce Europe rankings also underscores the rapid ascent of platforms like Temu, Zalando, and Farfetch, signaling the increasing importance and robust growth of cross-border e-commerce across the continent.

In the fiercely competitive fashion sector, American e-commerce giant Amazon retains its top position from 2024. Following closely, China's Temu has ascended one spot, now occupying second place, while Germany's Zalando has made an impressive leap of four places to secure third. The top ten further includes China's Aliexpress, American Ebay, Nike, and Etsy. Rounding out the list are Lithuania's Vinted, which moved up one position, Sweden's H&M, and Japan's Uniqlo, showcasing a diverse mix of global and regional players.

The beauty market's cross-border ranking remains firmly under the leadership of Czech retailer Notino. American Fragrantica holds the second spot, followed by Belgian Di. The Netherlands contributes two significant players, Farmaline and Rituals, occupying 4th and 6th places respectively, with Switzerland's Oriflame positioned between them at 5th. Germany's Douglas ranks 7th, ahead of American brands Byrdie, Jafra, and The Ordinary. Notably, French brand Cerave, which was 4th last year, has fallen out of the Top 10.

Austria's Swarovski impressively holds onto its premier position in the luxury sector. This year, it is followed by Britain's Farfetch and Switzerland's Rolex, both prominent names in high-end retail. The French second-hand portal Vestiaire Collective secures a strong 4th place, reflecting the growing trend in sustainable luxury. Other notable contenders include Switzerland's Tissot, Canada's Ssense, and another French company, Moncler. The Top 10 for luxury is completed by American Nordstrom, German Chrono24, and Swiss Tag Heuer.

The expansion of cross-border e-commerce in these sectors is set for remarkable growth. According to data from Cross-Border CBCommerce, cross-border trade is projected to account for a substantial 45% of European fashion, luxury, and beauty online sales by 2026, reaching an estimated value of 105 billion euros. This marks a significant increase from its 38% market share in 2024, which generated 82 billion euros. This upward trajectory, as estimated by CBCommerce, is largely driven by the strong online presence of beauty and luxury pure players, the emergence of Chinese newcomers like Shein and Temu, and the rapid expansion of global C2C marketplaces that offer appealing sustainable second-hand fashion and resale options.

Collectively, fashion, beauty, and luxury represent a significant segment of the European online retail landscape, accounting for 23% of all product categories sold online. CBCommerce anticipates continued growth for these sectors over the next three years. Currently, e-commerce contributes to approximately 30.5% of the cumulative sales within these three dynamic markets, underscoring their critical role in the broader digital economy.
