Fairfax Boost Fuels Under Armour Stock Surge
Under Armour Inc. experienced a significant surge in after-hours trading on Monday, climbing as much as 7.2%, following the disclosure of a substantial investment by Fairfax Financial Holdings. This jump indicates renewed investor confidence in the sportswear company.
According to a recent filing, Fairfax Financial Holdings now owns approximately 42 million shares of Under Armour, representing a 22% stake in the company. This is a considerable increase from their previously reported holdings, adding nearly 36 million shares to their portfolio as of December 30th.
This investment arrives at a critical juncture for Under Armour, which has faced headwinds in the past year. The company has been working to recover from challenges including the departure of its prominent endorser, NBA star Stephen Curry, a split that significantly impacted its brand image.
The past year proved difficult for Under Armour, with the company’s stock price declining by 40% amidst a consistent downturn in revenue. This substantial investment from Fairfax Financial Holdings could signal a belief in the company’s potential for future growth and a possible turnaround strategy.
As of now, Under Armour has not issued an official comment regarding Fairfax’s increased stake. Representatives from Fairfax Financial Holdings were also unavailable for immediate comment on their investment decision.
