Farida Khelfa's Iconic Collection Fetches €330,000 and Sets an Alaïa Auction Record
The auction of the fashion collection belonging to Farida Khelfa, a Paris socialite, filmmaker, and former runway star, raised €330,000, confirming the robust nature of the vintage market. Organized by Maurice Auction, a Paris firm specializing in art and luxury, the sale, titled "Garde-Robe Iconique de Farida Khelfa," generated a total of €332,343. Half of the proceeds from the sale are set to be donated to charity.
Khelfa's life story is closely intertwined with French fashion history; she ran away from her family in Lyons at 15 to pursue a modelling career in Paris. She quickly rose to prominence, walking in shows for legendary designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier and Azzedine Alaïa. Khelfa later became the brand ambassador for Schiaparelli. Her influence extended beyond the runway; in 2008, she was a witness at the wedding of Carla Bruni and Nicolas Sarkozy, who was then the French president.
The collection featured approximately 200 pieces, encompassing outfits, shoes, and accessories from Khelfa's personal archives throughout her storied career. Designs from Alaïa, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Schiaparelli made up the majority of the items sold, reflecting her deep connections to these houses. The auction also included creations from other notable designers, including Christian Louboutin, Pierre Cardin, Prada, Saint Laurent, and Jean Charles de Castelbajac.
The lots featuring designs by Alaïa sparked particularly intense competition among bidders, ultimately achieving a world record for an Alaïa piece sold from a private collection. Highlights of the auction included a 1996 Alaïa ensemble consisting of a gilet and a flared skirt, which reached €50,700. Additionally, an epic leopard-print calfskin trench coat by Alaïa fetched €27,300. The sale attracted international collectors, confirming Farida Khelfa’s status as an icon and demonstrating the market’s continued interest in her archives.
Following the auction, Farida Khelfa expressed her gratitude to the buyers. "I thank the buyers: their gesture shows as much elegance as generosity. These resonate particularly well with RIACE, and I am sincerely grateful to them," she said. Half of the profits will be donated to the RIACE Fund, which is dedicated to solidarity actions, underscoring the charitable purpose behind the sale.
