Fragrance Finds: M&S’s Affordable Scents Are a Christmas Gift Hit

Affordable fragrances are proving to be a top gift choice this Christmas, with Marks & Spencer (M&S) reporting a surge in sales of its own-label “Discover” range. The retailer attributes this trend to consumers seeking accessible luxuries, allowing them to treat both themselves and loved ones without significant expense.

M&S’s Discover range offers remarkably low price points, starting at just £7 for 30ml, £10 for 100ml, and £16 for 100ml Eau de Parfums – a line launched in October. This affordability is resonating with shoppers, contributing to a broader industry trend of strong fragrance sales across all price brackets this festive season.

The numbers speak for themselves: M&S has already sold half a million bottles of fragrance this quarter, with projections exceeding one million by the quarter’s end. This performance positions fragrance as one of the most popular beauty categories for Christmas shoppers. Notably, the brand’s signature scent, Soft Iris, is flying off the shelves, selling an impressive 2,100 bottles daily in the last week alone.

Beyond the core Discover range, M&S has also introduced limited-edition winter fragrances – Winter Nights and Sparkle & Shine – which have further fueled sales. Winter Nights sold out in a remarkable eight weeks, and Sparkle & Shine is predicted to follow suit within the next two weeks. Both seasonal scents have outperformed last year’s offerings, selling 10% faster and indicating a growing consumer appetite for festive fragrances.

This success has significantly boosted M&S’s market share in the own-label fragrance sector, growing from 8.3% to 12.4% over the past year. This growth reflects a wider consumer shift towards “affordable indulgence,” prioritizing small, special luxuries that don’t carry a hefty price tag.

James Mugford, Head of Beauty at M&S, highlights the strategic importance of own-brand success, stating that fragrance is a prime example of how it attracts new customers and modernizes the retailer’s overall offering. He emphasizes that during the Christmas season, customers are particularly focused on finding gifts that are both thoughtful and budget-friendly.
