France Pushes EU for Shein Probe Over Illegal Goods

France has intensified its efforts to prompt the European Union into launching a formal investigation against the Chinese online fast-fashion giant, Shein. The call for inquiry stems from serious allegations concerning the sale of illicit products on Shein's marketplace, specifically child-like sex dolls and banned weapons. This move by France highlights a growing concern over content moderation and product safety on large online platforms operating within the EU.

In response to these grave concerns, France had already initiated steps to ban Shein within its borders. Concurrently, Shein took pre-emptive action by suspending its marketplace operations in France to conduct a thorough review of its third-party sellers. This suspension follows an earlier global halt on the sale of sex dolls by the retailer. These actions underscore the immediate impact of regulatory pressure and the platforms' responsibility to address compliance issues.

The formal pressure on the EU was solidified through a letter penned by France's finance minister, Roland Lescure, and digital minister, Anne le Henanff. Addressed to EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen, the letter served as an official alert to the European Commission and all member states regarding these "serious breaches" within France. The French ministers expressed an expectation that similar risks could be associated with Shein's activities across other European Union countries, urging the Commission to conduct investigations "without delay" to uncover the mechanisms that allowed such illegal items to be sold on the platform.

Upon receiving the letter, a European Commission spokesperson confirmed its arrival and indicated that the body would assess the information and determine the appropriate next steps. Shein holds the classification of a "Very Large Online Platform" (VLOP) under the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA). This classification grants the Commission significant powers to investigate platforms for potential breaches of the law, making an official inquiry a distinct possibility given the gravity of the allegations.

Further communication from the European Commission later in the day confirmed ongoing contact with both French authorities and Shein. The spokesperson reiterated that any platform permitting pornographic content or facilitating the sale of weapons is in violation of EU law, a principle that will drive the Commission's subsequent actions. While acknowledging the severity of the French complaint, the spokesperson noted that the Commission was not aware of similar concerns raised by other member states and, importantly, currently has no intention to suspend any platforms EU-wide.
