Frasers Group considers acquisition of collapsed independent brand SilkFred

Frasers Group is reportedly considering a bid for the failed business SilkFred as part of its ongoing strategy to acquire brands with growth potential or unique business models. This move aligns with Frasers' focus on integrating new concepts into its wider operations. SilkFred, which operated for 15 years, specialized in connecting independent womenswear designers and labels directly with consumers, with a specific focus on unique pieces and occasionwear from indie brands.

Frasers Group's rumored interest in SilkFred comes as no surprise, given its reputation as one of the most acquisitive businesses in the UK fashion market. The company recently added to its portfolio by acquiring shopping destinations Braehead and Swindon Designer Outlet, securing a majority stake in the luxury LA store The Webster, and significantly increasing its investment in ASOS. With a 26% holding, Frasers Group is ASOS's second-biggest shareholder. Although Frasers has not commented on the potential acquisition, SilkFred would fit Frasers' strategy of targeting younger consumers across various price levels.

SilkFred entered administration in October, with Quantuma handling the process, following months of struggling financial performance. The company’s most recent results for 2023 showed significant challenges: losses widened considerably as sales fell by 46% to just £11.18 million. The company’s struggles in recent months ultimately led to its collapse this autumn.

By contrast, Frasers Group remains a giant in the retail sector. Its half-year results to the end of October demonstrated robust financial health, reporting revenue of £2.58 billion and retail trading profit of £411.4 million, highlighting the vast resources available for strategic acquisitions.
