French Fashion Icons Honored in Prestigious New Year’s List
Leading figures in French fashion were prominently recognized in the nation’s annual New Year’s honours list, celebrating their significant contributions to the industry and French culture. Among those honoured were Nicolas Ghesquière and Ralph Toledano, both highly respected and influential within the fashion world.
Nicolas Ghesquière, the esteemed women’s creative director of Louis Vuitton, was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honour, a prestigious and high-level decoration bestowed by the French Republic. This acknowledgement underscores his artistic vision and impact on global fashion trends.
Ralph Toledano, the former president of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM), received a promotion to Officer of the Legion of Honour. He was initially made a Knight in 2003, demonstrating a sustained and remarkable career of service to the French fashion industry. Toledano expressed his gratitude, noting the continued support of the Macron administration for French fashion.
Toledano further emphasized that the award recognized not only his personal passion for fashion but also the collective achievements of the talented brands and designers he has collaborated with throughout his career. He highlighted the importance of creativity and the exceptional teams that bring it to life, acknowledging his debt to them. His impressive career includes leadership roles at Karl Lagerfeld, Guy Laroche (where he appointed Alber Elbaz as designer), and Chloé during Phoebe Philo’s innovative period.
He also specifically cited the accomplishments during his tenure as president of the FHCM, particularly the successful merger of IFM and l’ École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne into l’ Institut Français de la Mode. Currently serving as chairman of Victoria Beckham, Toledano’s influence continues to shape the fashion landscape.
The honours list also included recognition for three prominent women in French luxury. Céline Brucker, general manager of L’Oréal France; Nathalie Célia-Kock-Chevalier, managing director of Bucherer France; and Diana Widmaier Picasso, co-founder and artistic director of jewellery house Mené, were all promoted to Knight, acknowledging their leadership and contributions to their respective fields.
