French Footwear Firm Expands Across Europe
Founded over a century ago in Aquitaine, France, Rondinaud is a footwear company embarking on an ambitious expansion into Northern European markets, with future plans including establishing a presence in Germany, Spain, and Italy. This growth strategy is being pursued by the small, fifteen-employee firm, and is supported by significant achievements including its Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status and a growing international reputation.
A key indicator of Rondinaud’s success and quality is its presence in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. The MoMA Design Store stocks the company’s signature product: the traditional, glue-free *charentaise* slipper, handmade in La Rochefoucauld. “From securing PGI status to our presence in the United States, these marks of recognition are a tremendous source of pride and a testament to the value of our fifteen employees and our expertise,” states Olivier Rondinaud, highlighting the importance of both heritage and craftsmanship.
Rondinaud’s vision extends beyond recognition; the company aims to establish the *charentaise* as a household staple throughout Europe, representing both comfort and style, and acting as an “ambassador for Charente,” the region where it originated. This expansion is being facilitated by a robust retail network currently encompassing approximately 500 points of sale, a mix of dedicated Rondinaud boutiques and partnerships with multi-brand retailers, complemented by a comprehensive online store showcasing the full product line.
The focus on Northern Europe is strategically driven by the region’s climate and cultural preferences. Rondinaud recognizes a strong alignment between the qualities of its wool-felt *charentaise* – utilizing around 38 tonnes of felt annually – and the Northern European lifestyle, particularly the concept of “cocooning” and the demand for warm, comfortable footwear during colder months.
Currently producing between 450 and 500 pairs of *charentaise* daily, Rondinaud experienced strong sales in 2024, exceeding 90,000 pairs. The company projects a turnover of €1.9 million for the 2025 financial year, demonstrating a positive trajectory and solidifying its position for continued growth within the European market.
