French Lawmakers Demand Shein Ban Citing Environmental and Labor Abuses

A significant coalition of over 80 Members of Parliament in France, spearheaded by Sandrine Le Feur, Chair of the National Assembly's Sustainable Development Committee, has publicly called for a "ban on Shein in France." In an article published in La Tribune Dimanche, these elected officials argued that such a measure is crucial to safeguard workers' rights, protect public health, and preserve the environment from the detrimental impacts of the ultra-fast fashion industry.

The MPs' urgent appeal comes in the wake of the Asian brand's recent opening at the prestigious BHV department store in Paris in early November. This move, according to the 83 signatories – who include members from various political groups such as Ensemble pour la République, PS, Horizons, LR, and MoDem – does not democratise fashion but rather legitimises Shein's controversial business model. They contend that the company represents "the most brutal face of fast fashion" and that its attempts to project an image of respectability cannot "mask what lies behind the façade, as it destroys the planet, our jobs and consumers' health." The signatories assert that "one measure is essential: a ban on Shein in France," accusing the giant of "unfair competition" and flooding the market with "toxic products."

In response to growing indignation and the necessity for concrete action, the National Assembly's Sustainable Development Committee has taken a direct approach by summoning Shein's executives. The committee aims to thoroughly question the company regarding its practices, a hearing that the MPs noted Shein had initially "tried to avoid." While originally slated for November 26, the hearing was subsequently postponed to December 2, with the e-commerce platform citing an inability to attend due to a conflicting court hearing on the same day.

This court appearance highlights broader legal challenges Shein faces in France. The platform was summoned before the Paris Judicial Court on Wednesday morning to address accusations concerning the sale of child-like sex dolls and Category A weapons, with the court set to rule on potentially suspending the site in France. This judicial commitment was also cited by Shein as the reason for declining an earlier hearing on November 18 before a fact-finding mission focused on checks on products imported into France.

Further demonstrating a concerted legislative push, a motion for a European resolution was tabled in the National Assembly this week. This cross-party initiative, supported by MPs from across the political spectrum (excluding the LFI, RN, and UDR groups), advocates for tougher regulatory action against certain platforms. This significant motion is scheduled for examination this Wednesday, reflecting a broader intent to address the issues posed by fast fashion and e-commerce giants at a European level.

Shein's operations in France have already drawn official penalties this year. The company has received three fines, collectively totalling 191 million euros. These penalties were primarily imposed due to practices such as false promotions and the dissemination of misleading information, underscoring a pattern of non-compliance with consumer protection regulations.
