George at Asda launches pioneering adaptive clothing range inspired by breast cancer campaigner Nicky Newman
George at Asda is set to launch a pioneering adult adaptive clothing range next week, on September 15th. This new 28-piece collection from the value fashion and lifestyle brand is specifically designed to cater to the unique physical needs of individuals undergoing medical treatment, aiming to provide comfort and dignity during challenging times.
The inspiration for this significant collection stems directly from the legacy of the late breast cancer campaigner Nicky Newman. Newman’s powerful 2023 advocacy for accessible and affordable adaptive fashion was driven by her personal experiences, and her profound determination to enhance the comfort and dignity of others facing similar health challenges.
The range incorporates thoughtful features to address a variety of specific needs. These include strategically placed openings designed to accommodate feeding tubes, discreet pockets specifically for stoma bags, and adaptive fasteners for ease of use. Furthermore, the collection utilizes metal-free zips, all meticulously integrated to ensure maximum comfort, functionality, and a sense of dignity for the wearer.
Bringing this innovative collection to fruition has been a two-year endeavor. The design teams at George dedicated extensive time to gathering comprehensive feedback, ensuring that every item produced was not only useful and comfortable but also suitable for as wide a range of conditions and needs as possible. This meticulous development process underscores George's commitment to the project's core mission.
The collection offers a variety of stylish yet practical items, all at accessible price points. Examples include navy joggers (£16), a blue logo T-shirt (£11), cream wide leg joggers (£16), the Palm Springs cream hoody (£20), a blue seashell sweatshirt (£18), grey wide leg joggers (£16), and the St Tropez grey sweat (£18), also paired with grey wide leg joggers (£16).
Karl Doyle, Vice-President of George Clothing, expressed immense pride in the launch: “We have worked closely with Nicky, Alex and their network of friends to create this bold adaptive range that we hope has fulfilled Nicky’s wishes. We have taken time and passion to really understand the specific needs of each item produced -- how we can make them more comfortable, fashionable, affordable and dignified. Today is such a proud moment to see the range launch and we hope it will benefit many more people with specific treatment needs.”
Alex Newman, Nicky’s husband, shared the profound personal significance of the collection. “Nicky was inspired to work with George at Asda to really push for comfortable and affordable clothing lines with adaptable options for others like herself – clothing that allowed you to retain comfort and dignity at a time when that was already difficult,” he stated. Poignantly, Alex revealed, “The first time Nicky saw the samples was the day she went into Woking Hospice. Five days later, she passed away. Seeing those samples and understanding the goals Nicky and George at Asda were striving for was incredible. I wanted Nicky’s dream to be upheld. With her as the driving force behind this, I felt truly inspired, and I’m proud to keep her name and memory alive.”
This new adaptive clothing range from George at Asda stands as a testament to Nicky Newman’s enduring legacy and the brand's commitment to inclusivity. By combining practicality, comfort, and affordability, the collection aims to significantly improve the daily lives and maintain the dignity of countless individuals navigating treatment, transforming a deeply personal challenge into a widely accessible solution.
