Harrods Buyer: London Fashion Week Defies Trends with Diverse Designer Triumphs

Harrods’ top fashion buyer, Simon Longland, has identified several standout successes from the recent London Fashion Week, applauding a diverse range of designers including Roksanda, Erdem, Patrick McDowell, Priya Ahluwalia, and Burberry for their impactful presentations. His assessment highlighted the unique character of London's fashion scene, which continues to challenge traditional trend forecasting.

Longland noted that London's inherent resistance to "strict categorisation" was particularly evident this season, a strength that was consistently reinforced across the collections. He observed that from "sculptural tailoring to romantic craftsmanship to youth-driven festival references at Burberry," the rich diversity of aesthetics underscored a city that thrives on individuality rather than conforming to homogenised trends.

Despite this broad spectrum, Longland did pinpoint several "must-have" pieces that skillfully combined artistic vision with strong commercial appeal. These included the "standout gowns at Roksanda," the "refined yet powerful tailoring at Emilia Wickstead," and the "romantic, wearable separates at Simone Rocha," all demonstrating a perfect blend of creativity and market desirability.

Among his top show picks, Roksanda's 20th-anniversary collection received particular praise. Longland described it as "a true celebration of her signatures—dramatic tailoring, elegant gowns, and the striking interplay between form-fitting silhouettes and exaggerated volume, all brought together with her masterful use of colour." This milestone show powerfully reaffirmed the brand's distinctive aesthetic.

Similarly, Erdem’s 20th-anniversary show was celebrated for "reaffirming his exceptional skill in form, fabrication, and workmanship." Longland also commended the show's format, held at the British Museum, describing it as "a landmark moment, perfectly balancing grandeur and intimacy, offering an immersive backdrop that enhanced the storytelling of the collection."

Regarding Burberry, Daniel Lee’s collection was seen as "a confident embrace of a younger client, rooted firmly in British culture and the energy of music festivals." Longland highlighted the pervasive presence of iconic coats, jackets, and trenches, with leather emerging as a significant strength, lending "structure, attitude and a modern edge to the brand’s heritage." He particularly noted the collection's balance between authenticity and relevance, indicating a reinterpretation of house codes for contemporary culture, signalling Burberry’s commitment to honouring its legacy while investing in its future audience.

Looking to the future, Longland believes Patrick McDowell and Priya Ahluwalia are the labels "to watch." He lauded their "compelling, individualistic collections that underline the strength of London’s emerging scene." For Harrods, this signifies a proactive approach to "careful observation—recognising and championing creativity at its early stages, with the possibility of deeper collaborations in the future."
