High Street Meltdown Claire's and Bodycare Face Drastic Restructuring Amidst Retail Crisis
The challenging landscape of UK retail continues to claim casualties and prompt significant restructuring, with two prominent chains, Claire's and Bodycare, currently navigating turbulent waters. Both companies are facing critical junctures, reflecting a broader trend of economic pressures and evolving consumer habits impacting the high street across the country.
News has recently emerged concerning the failed accessories chain Claire's, which entered administration last month. Sky News reported that two formidable buyers are now vying to take over its UK operations. Modella Capital, known for its acquisition-hungry strategies and as the new owner of WH Smith's high street stores (set to be rebranded as TG Jones), has expressed strong interest. Simultaneously, Canadian billionaire Doug Putman, a well-known figure for his enthusiastic bids on distressed businesses, including his successful turnaround of HMV and an attempted acquisition of Wilko, is also in the running. Both parties are understood to have tabled bids, though it remains unclear which is in the lead or if there are other contenders in this critical battle.
The sale of Claire's UK and Irish stores is being managed by Interpath, with the 278 UK and 28 Irish outlets continuing to trade as bids are assessed. While this process unfolds, it is widely anticipated that a significant number of stores will ultimately close. This outcome puts approximately 2,150 jobs at risk across the chain, with suggestions circulating that a core of around 100 stores might eventually remain operational.
Meanwhile, the beauty chain Bodycare, which operates 147 stores, has announced a substantial restructuring plan involving the closure of 32 of its outlets. This painful decision will result in the loss of 450 jobs. The move follows recent reports that the company was on the brink of administration if a rescue deal could not be secured – a deal that ultimately did not materialise. The affected stores are spread geographically from Scotland to Southern England, encompassing locations such as Edinburgh, Scunthorpe, Maidstone, Croydon, Morecambe, Wood Green, Newport, Port Talbot, Rhyl, and Wrexham.
Bodycare, despite being a previously profitable company, has encountered a "tsunami of problems" in recent years. These challenges include a squeeze on consumer spending due to cash-strapped customers, rising operational costs, a delayed transition to a new online retail platform, an aborted stock market listing attempt, and ongoing funding issues. Interpath is also overseeing the Bodycare situation, actively seeking a buyer for the remaining business, which comprises 115 operational stores, in an effort to secure its future.
