HOFF Hires Sneaker Visionary to Forge Design-Led Fashion Future

Spanish sneaker brand HOFF has announced a significant strategic evolution, marked by the appointment of its first-ever Creative Chief, a major brand relaunch, and a high-profile campaign featuring Alexa Chung. The eight-year-old company, founded and led by Fran Marchena, has enjoyed robust growth and is now embarking on a new chapter, aiming to establish itself with a "truly design-led fashion-forward positioning."

To spearhead this ambition, HOFF has brought on board David Tourniaire-Beauciel as its head of design. Tourniaire-Beauciel's career is celebrated for its transformative impact on the sneaker landscape. His extensive experience includes roles at Chloé, Jean Paul Gaultier, Maison Martin Margiela, Givenchy, Ferragamo, and Balenciaga, where he is credited with creating the iconic Triple S and pioneering the sock-sneaker hybrid. He is widely recognized for accelerating the maximalist sneaker movement that reshaped global culture, making his appointment a bold statement for HOFF in a competitive market.

This new era for HOFF builds on a powerful dual fluency: Marchena’s growth-driven, community-anchored business model converges with Tourniaire-Beauciel’s couture-coded, sculptural design ethos. The collaboration aims to forge a purpose-driven sneaker brand that seamlessly fuses Spain’s rich shoemaking heritage with a contemporary fashion lens. This move signals HOFF’s transformation into a global design powerhouse, where shoes transcend mere functionality to become cultural objects.

Fran Marchena elaborated on the strategic thinking behind these changes, explaining that HOFF has been working on a 2028 strategic plan centered on three pillars: brand elevation, expansion from local to global, and community building. Brand elevation is deemed the most crucial, as the company transitions from a period of rapid growth and market fit to a new chapter that remains design-driven but is poised for the "next level." He sees Tourniaire-Beauciel's arrival as a pivotal step in this brand elevation strategy.

Currently, HOFF is generating around €70 million in revenue, with projections to reach €80 million by the fiscal year's end in April. Approximately 90% of its business is concentrated in Europe, with Spain, Germany, Benelux, France, and the UK being the five primary markets. The company has recently initiated expansion into the US with a local partner to secure key strategic accounts, expecting significant results soon. Globally, HOFF boasts over 30 stores and partnerships with 1,200 wholesale retailers, blending Spanish craftsmanship with modern, design-driven aesthetics.

Marchena also highlighted a significant shift in the company’s sales channels. While wholesale currently accounts for 45% of the business, retail contributes 35%, and online sales make up 20%. This represents an evolution from two years ago when wholesale dominated at 60%, reinforcing HOFF’s strategic move towards strengthening its direct-to-consumer channels through aggressive retail expansion. This year alone saw the opening of a 600 sq m flagship store in Madrid, alongside new locations in London, Amsterdam, and Mexico City, with plans for Paris and Milan in the near future.

The UK market is particularly important and experiencing rapid growth for HOFF. The Regent Street store is performing exceptionally well, with like-for-like growth exceeding 70% year-on-year, and online sales contributing over 20% of total UK revenue. The brand is also set to launch with Browns for the Spring/Summer season, a milestone expected to further solidify its positioning. The campaign featuring Alexa Chung for David Tourniaire-Beauciel’s ‘SEVEN’ model is anticipated to significantly boost brand awareness in the region and beyond.

David Tourniaire-Beauciel shared his initial perception of HOFF as a "follower" brand but found immense appeal in its fresh, young energy during his first collaboration. He embraced the unique challenge of building a brand from a relatively blank slate, a departure from working with luxury labels steeped in extensive archives. This opportunity to shape HOFF's image and direction, beyond just product, was a key draw for him.

Tourniaire-Beauciel emphasized an approach of "evolution before revolution." He intends to respect HOFF’s existing DNA and capitalize on its strengths, rather than discarding previous work. His goal is to analyze current strengths and weaknesses with the team, then apply his experience to bring the brand closer to, and eventually ahead of, trends. He aims to ensure that HOFF shoes remain distinctly identifiable while evolving to be more fashion-forward and connected to contemporary styles.

Crucially, Tourniaire-Beauciel appreciates HOFF’s democratic positioning and its commitment to offering design at a more accessible price point, distinguishing it from the often €1,000-plus sneaker market. He sees this as an important part of his role. While new interpretations of shoes will emerge, they will represent a "smooth evolution," tapping into current trends like the "flat sneaker" movement and a return to "small feet"—more refined and elegant sneaker silhouettes after a period dominated by bulkier designs. He plans to integrate technical elements from sports with more refined materials and lines.

Clarifying HOFF’s identity, Tourniaire-Beauciel stated that it is an urban brand, not a performance sports brand, despite utilizing sports elements for technical benefits. The integration of technical materials aims to enhance comfort for all-day wear, with technique serving to support design rather than define performance.

Regarding HOFF's past, Tourniaire-Beauciel identified a potential weakness as a reluctance to propose radical newness. However, he highlighted numerous strengths: its youth, freshness, rapid success, and the energetic leadership of Fran Marchena. He also expressed admiration for the brand's solid business acumen, describing them as "super-serious" and "super-rational," combined with the appealing link to Spain’s vibrant culture and energy.
