Hugo Boss Leadership in Doubt as Major Shareholder Withdraws Support

The leadership stability at Hugo Boss has been called into question following a significant development concerning the chairman of its supervisory board. Stephan Sturm, who currently holds this crucial position, has reportedly lost the backing of Frasers Group, the prominent fashion company's largest shareholder. This critical information emerged on Friday evening through a regulatory announcement issued by Hugo Boss, which included a direct statement from Frasers Group.

According to Frasers Group's statement, their support for Stephan Sturm as chairman of the Hugo Boss supervisory board has been withdrawn. This withdrawal of support carries considerable weight, as Sturm had previously communicated to Frasers Group that he would not continue in his role as chairman without their endorsement. Frasers Group, which holds a substantial 25 per cent stake in Hugo Boss, making it by far the company’s largest shareholder, has indicated its intent to influence the composition of Hugo Boss’s supervisory board. This move is explicitly aimed at, if necessary, facilitating Sturm's removal and subsequently appointing a new chairman to the supervisory board.

However, the narrative took a conflicting turn with a separate statement published by Hugo Boss on the same Friday. This statement directly contradicted the implications of Frasers Group's position, asserting that the future of its supervisory board chairman was secure. The fashion group's official communication declared, "Stephan Sturm stands by his responsibility as chairman of the supervisory board and firmly intends to continue in this role," signaling a potential boardroom struggle despite the substantial influence of its largest shareholder.
