Human Made IPO Priced Higher on Strong Investor Demand

Human Made Inc., the Japanese streetwear powerhouse founded by celebrity designer Nigo, who previously established the iconic A Bathing Ape (BAPE) fashion line, has significantly increased the price of its upcoming initial public offering (IPO) shares. This adjustment comes in response to robust investor demand, indicating strong market confidence in the brand.

According to a recent regulatory filing, the company has set a new price range of ¥3,000 to ¥3,130 for its shares, which are slated for listing on the Tokyo stock exchange. This revised range marks an increase from the earlier estimated price of ¥2,920. Bloomberg calculations suggest that this boost could enable the initial public offering to raise as much as ¥17.8 billion ($116 million), encompassing shares sold by existing stakeholders, including Nigo and celebrated musician Pharrell Williams. The funds generated from the issuance of new shares will be strategically allocated towards opening new retail locations across Japan and bolstering other vital capital expenditures, such as investments in its e-commerce infrastructure.

The listing of Human Made coincides with a broader resurgence of interest in Japanese pop culture on a global scale. This renewed fascination is largely fueled by the immense popularity of Japanese anime and video games from industry giants like Nintendo Co. and Sony Group Corp. This cultural wave, combined with a favorable exchange rate for the Japanese yen, has been instrumental in attracting a surge of tourists to the Asian nation, consequently driving up retail sales across various sectors, including fashion.

Nigo, whose birth name is Tomoaki Nagao, brings a wealth of experience and acclaim to Human Made, having previously served as the top designer at the prestigious fashion house Kenzo, which is owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE. The forthcoming deal is poised to value Human Made at an impressive ¥71.7 billion. The stock is anticipated to commence trading on the Tokyo bourse on November 27, following its official pricing scheduled for the preceding week. Nomura Holdings Inc. and Mizuho Financial Group Inc. are serving as the lead arrangers for this high-profile IPO.

The strong investor interest is further underscored by commitments from prominent financial institutions. A Monday filing revealed that investors such as Sumitomo Mitsui DS Asset Management and MY.Alpha Management HK Advisors Ltd. have expressed keen interest in participating in the IPO. Furthermore, Asset Management One Co. has committed to purchasing a portion of the shares, reinforcing the positive outlook for Human Made's market debut.
