Hybrid Shopping Dominates Christmas Season as Consumers Demand Omnichannel Retail Experiences

The upcoming Christmas season is set to be defined by a significant shift in consumer behavior, according to data from CACI, with "hybrid shopping" emerging as the dominant trend. A substantial 87% of UK consumers plan to purchase gifts using both online and in-store channels this year. This data highlights the necessity for retailers to maintain a strong omnichannel presence, as only a small fraction of shoppers intend to commit exclusively to one channel: just 7% plan to shop solely in-store, and only 6% plan to conduct all their shopping online.

While the hybrid model prevails overall, generational and gender differences introduce interesting nuances. Among Gen Z shoppers, significant contrasts appear, with 19% of males planning to shop entirely online compared to only 1% of females in the same age group. Conversely, Baby Boomers show a greater inclination toward physical retail, with 13% of males and 7% of females expecting to purchase all gifts in-store. Despite these variations, the data indicates that physical retail remains more prominent among older shoppers, though the hybrid approach still dominates across all demographics.

Past retail performance further validates the advantage of adopting a robust multichannel strategy. Last year, brands that successfully integrated physical and digital buying behaviors, offering seamless experiences, personalization, and strong online platforms, saw some of the biggest gains. This data supports the idea that retailers must offer a cohesive experience across all touchpoints to maximize customer engagement and sales performance, especially during peak holiday periods.

Several brands illustrate the success of this approach. Korean beauty retailer PureSeoul, which strategically combines digital reach with selective in-person experiences, achieved remarkable growth, more than doubling its sales in December 2024 compared to the previous year, with a reported 118% increase. Similarly, Uniqlo, a major clothing and lifestyle retailer, reported a 22% year-on-year omnichannel increase in December 2024 sales, demonstrating strong performance through integrated channels.

Alex McCulloch, Director at CACI, emphasizes that winning brands this season will be those that embrace a "true multichannel approach." He notes that physical stores serve a critical purpose beyond transactions; they build loyalty that seamlessly extends to online channels. Furthermore, retailers are increasingly transforming their stores into experiential spaces or "clubhouses" that foster community and connection, thereby engaging customers long before a purchase is made and reinforcing brand loyalty early in the customer journey.
