Hyères Festival Shines Bright Again After Budget Crisis

The atmosphere on the forecourt of Villa Noailles was nothing short of effervescent as a tightly packed crowd gathered, delighted to participate once again in the Hyères International Festival of Fashion, Photography and Accessories. This highly anticipated 40th edition, a beacon for emerging talent in the fashion world, was celebrated with a palpable sense of relief and determination, especially given that the event had recently navigated a severe budget crisis. Attendees expressed a collective resolve to ensure its success, underscoring the deep affection and commitment the community holds for this unique cultural gathering.

A striking symbol of renewal and celebration adorned the imposing rationalist building: a flag bearing a multicoloured sun, designed by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, a member of this year's Fashion competition jury. This vibrant emblem was echoed by another large rainbow sun setting the backdrop for the opening ceremony, held on a newly arranged stage in the garden. This new setup, a gentle departure from traditional rituals, marked a significant transition for the Festival. Pascale Mussard, President of Villa Noailles, articulated the sentiment perfectly, declaring, "This sun represents what Villa Noailles is all about: dream, creation… It's the sun that will celebrate this 40th edition," as she gratefully acknowledged "all the people who make the Festival possible."

Following Mussard, Hyères Mayor Jean-Pierre Giran conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to all present, acknowledging the significant turnout. He emphasized, "There are many of you here, and that's what matters most, demonstrating your commitment to this project of creativity, modernity and youth." Hugo Lucchino, the new General Manager of the Villa Noailles art centre, highlighted the Festival's unparalleled nature, especially its extensive reach and remarkable longevity. Having recently taken up his post, Lucchino paid tribute to his predecessor and the Festival's emblematic founder, Jean-Pierre Blanc, a sentiment echoed by the Mayor and Pascal Morand, Executive President of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode.

Before officially declaring the Festival open, Lucchino extended special thanks to the numerous partners whose unwavering support proved critical during this pivotal moment for Villa Noailles. This extensive network includes essential local institutional partners and the French Ministry of Culture, alongside a distinguished roster of private sponsors. Notable names such as Chanel, Le 19M, LVMH, Hermès, Supima, Kering, American Vintage, and Première Classe were among those recognized for stepping up and ensuring the continued vibrancy and operation of this internationally acclaimed event.

The sense of revitalized energy was widely felt and articulated by industry professionals. Designer Lutz Huelle, a jury member in 2015, expressed his enthusiasm: "I'm really happy, I feel there's incredible energy. You can sense that everyone is fully on board. We all want it to continue, because it's a great festival." Huelle also noted a "kind of 'reset'," praising the decision to feature a jury composed solely of fashion professionals rather than a single president, believing it better serves young designers and students. Mauro Grimaldi, a luxury sector consultant with three decades of attendance, underscored the vital importance of supporting such events. He concluded, "All anyone talks about is money, but it's crucial to support independent creativity, because the young talent it generates is what feeds the fashion industry. That's why this is a key edition."
