IKEA lands in New Zealand bringing Swedish style to Kiwi homes

IKEA has officially opened its doors in New Zealand, marking its entry into the 64th global market and establishing its most geographically distant outpost from its Swedish origins. This highly anticipated launch represents a significant milestone for the global furniture giant.

The expansive new store, spanning 34,000 square metres (365,973 square feet), is situated within the bustling Sylvia Park shopping centre in Auckland. This latest addition to IKEA's global footprint creates 500 local jobs and stands as the 505th store worldwide for the renowned retailer.

The journey to New Zealand began with the initial announcement of the expansion in 2019. This strategic move into the New Zealand market comes five decades after IKEA first established a presence in neighbouring Australia, further solidifying its reach across 64 diverse markets around the globe.

Ingka Group, the IKEA franchisee, highlighted the unique significance of this particular opening. Tolga Oncu, Retail Manager, expressed in a statement that the launch, which attracted thousands of eager customers, was particularly special given New Zealand's considerable distance from Sweden. Oncu emphasized that it represents "a real leap of faith, investment and friendship, showing we’re not just exporting a store, we’re planting roots for the long term, creating jobs, learning from local communities and tailoring our offer for Kiwi homes," underscoring a deep commitment to local integration and sustained growth.
