Intersport France Expands Southward Creating Southern European Hub

Intersport France and Belgium, under the leadership of its new managing director Philippe Giovanni, a specialist in consolidating distribution networks, is embarking on a significant phase of geographical expansion. This strategic move, which had been anticipated given Giovanni's track record, marks a notable broadening of the cooperative's footprint rather than the acquisition of another brand within France.

The French cooperative officially announced on November 3 that it had been "entrusted by ICC with the responsibility of overseeing Spain and Portugal." This mandate involves structuring a new "Southern European hub," which will integrate the operations of France, Belgium, Spain, and Portugal under a unified framework. This development follows several months of uncertainty regarding the future of Intersport's Iberian operations.

Earlier this year, the Intersport entity in the Iberian Peninsula had sought court protection after struggling to repay its debts. This entity, which comprised approximately 130 companies operating Intersport-branded stores and employing over 130 individuals, had been actively seeking potential buyers for a considerable period. Spanish media had previously estimated a potential purchase price for these operations to be in the region of €300 million ($323 million).

Gérard Leclerc, who now serves as the President of Intersport France, Spain, Portugal & Belgium, expressed his enthusiasm for the new direction. He stated, “This new step marks the recognition of the know-how of our French cooperative and of our ability to build a strong collective dynamic. By structuring a Southern European hub, we are affirming our ambition to make Intersport a benchmark player in a strategic area of the European sports market.”

While Intersport France and Belgium did not disclose the financial details of the transaction, the cooperative, based in Longjumeau near Paris, emphasized that this expansion aligns seamlessly with the substantial transformations it has undergone in recent years. These include the notable acquisition of Go Sport, comprehensive modernization efforts across its store network, and the successful launch of its refreshed brand platform.

Moving forward, Intersport France plans to leverage "the know-how, performance and robustness of the French model" to integrate the new territories. The strategy involves the creation of an Iberian subsidiary, with Intersport France directly assuming control of the Spanish central office and its existing staff, ensuring a smooth transition and continuity of operations.

This expansion is underpinned by Intersport France and Belgium's strong financial standing. The entity currently reports robust revenue of €3.88 billion ($4.18 billion) and commands a significant market share of more than 14%, positioning it well to undertake and successfully manage this ambitious Southern European integration.
