Irish fashion icon Paul Costelloe designer to Princess Diana dies at 80

Renowned Irish fashion designer Paul Costelloe, celebrated for his enduring presence at London Fashion Week and his distinguished role as personal designer to the late Princess Diana, has passed away at the age of 80. His family confirmed his peaceful passing in London on Saturday, surrounded by his loved ones, following a brief illness. Costelloe's career spanned four decades, cementing his legacy as a leading figure in the international fashion landscape.

Costelloe’s iconic association with Princess Diana began in 1983, shortly after he established his own label, Paul Costelloe Collections. Their fruitful collaboration continued until her tragic death in a car crash in Paris in 1997, with Costelloe creating many memorable ensembles for the beloved royal. His designs became synonymous with Diana's elegant and approachable style, solidifying his reputation.

A true fixture in the British fashion scene, Costelloe was invited to showcase his work at London Fashion Week in its inaugural year in 1984. He maintained an unbroken presence on its prestigious catwalks, consistently presenting new collections. Demonstrating his unwavering dedication to his craft, he was there as recently as September to unveil his latest spring-summer creations, developed entirely from his central London studio.

The family statement, quoted by local media, confirmed that Costelloe died peacefully surrounded by his wife and seven children. Details regarding a spokesperson for Costelloe were not immediately available for comment. His passing marks the end of an era for a designer whose influence resonated globally.

Born in Dublin in 1945, Costelloe’s foundational training began in his home city before he ventured to Paris, honing his skills at the revered Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. His international journey continued to another fashion capital, Milan, where he served as a designer for the luxury department store La Rinascente, further broadening his expertise and perspective in the industry.

He subsequently spent time in New York, where he successfully established his own label before ultimately settling in London. It was in the British capital that his partnership with Princess Diana truly flourished. Today, his diverse brand encompasses not only womenswear but also menswear, an array of bags, homeware, and jewellery, reflecting his expansive creative vision.

Tributes poured in, with Ireland's Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris acknowledging Costelloe's profound impact. Harris stated, "Paul led a remarkable life as a leading figure in Irish, UK and international fashion and business for decades. He built a hugely successful business through incredible talent, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to quality. His was and is a quite remarkable Irish success story."
